Elara spent the entire afternoon discussing strategy with Gillian.
It wasn't until it was almost time for Melody to finish school that she finally excused herself.
They left the coffee shop together. Gillian drove back to her firm, while Elara ordered a car.
While waiting for her ride, she found a moment to call Maddox.
It was highly inconvenient for her to visit The Beckett Manor right now. For one, she had zero desire to run into Meredith Beckett. More importantly, she couldn't risk Meredith finding out that Maddox was backing her.
Besides, Maddox was getting older, and with it being the dead of winter, she couldn't let him freeze just to meet her.
When the call connected, Elara began with a formal expression of gratitude, fully prepared to brief him on her meeting with Gillian.
Maddox had clearly heard enough of her thanks. He cut her off mid-sentence, threw out a gruff, "Handle it yourself, you don't need to report every little thing to me," and abruptly hung up.
Elara stared blankly at her phone screen until her driver called. It was only then that it finally registered: Had she just been brushed off?
Once in the car, she gave it some thought and realized that it would be stranger if he hadn't reacted that way.
Going to him for help had already been a huge imposition. If she reported every microscopic detail, wouldn't that just annoy him further?
It would be utterly ridiculous.
After picking Melody up and heading home, Elara casually recounted the situation to Jocelyn.
"He paid the legal fees too?"
Jocelyn was floored. "Why?"
Elara also wanted to know why, though a vague suspicion lingered in the back of her mind—one she wasn't entirely sure of.
"Maybe..." Elara murmured uncertainly, "maybe he sees a shadow of Juliet in me?"
