Elara left Julian on read for the entire afternoon.

After dinner, while the three of them were shopping downstairs, Julian finally lost his patience and called.

The phone buzzed relentlessly in her bag. Elara pulled it out, glanced at the screen, muted it, and shoved it right back in.

As if predicting her move, the call dropped, only for him to dial again a second later.

This time, the phone was still in her hand.

Jocelyn glanced over curiously. She didn't catch the caller ID but was puzzled by her daughter's reluctance. "Are you not going to answer that?"

"..."

She didn't want to.

Melody stopped walking and looked up at her, too.

Elara met the gazes of the older woman and the little girl, sighing in defeat. "Mom, take her inside first. I need to take this."

"Alright."

Phone in hand, Elara walked toward the fire exit stairwell. Just before it went to voicemail, she answered.

She didn't say a word, letting Julian's impatient voice blast through the speaker first.

"Hello? Hello?"

"Elara?"

"Why aren't you saying anything?"

He sounded incredibly irritated, which only made Elara feel the same.

She pulled the phone away from her ear, waiting for his barrage to end and for him to realize why she was giving him the silent treatment.

"Did you see my texts?"

He was still asking questions, though his tone had leveled out slightly. "Why did you ignore me all afternoon?"
