"In exactly two minutes," Elara said, her eyes fixed on the call timer, "I'm hanging up."
"..."
Prompted by her warning, Julian instinctively checked the time on his end. The counter ticked from two minutes and fifty-nine seconds right to the three-minute mark.
In the past, whenever they had occasional arguments, Elara would set a strict time limit to prevent the conflict from escalating and give them both space to cool down. During that window, they could air their grievances, but the moment time was up, they had to stop, no matter how furious they were, and reconvene only when they were entirely calm.
When she said two minutes, she meant exactly two minutes. The second the timer hit five minutes, regardless of whether they had reached an understanding, she would cut the line without hesitation.
As he scrambled to formulate a response, another five seconds slipped away.
"Elara!"
Julian panicked, terrified of wasting the remaining time. "I'm not joking around with you."
"Given our current situation, we obviously can't keep living together. Why are you clinging to this?"
"We were married. I'm not going to leave you out in the cold. Whether it's the house or the money, I'll..."
He wanted to promise that he would meet all her needs and ensure she lived comfortably, but the memory of his failed asset transfer abruptly choked him. Realizing she might be recording this conversation, he swallowed his empty promises.
"The company isn't doing well right now, but I'll do my best to accommodate you within my means."
He was still trying to lie to her, still trying to manipulate her even now!
Elara couldn't help but laugh.
Julian paused, his irritation flaring again. "What's so funny?"
"Are you treating me like an idiot?"
