"Wow, yes, yes! Keep it up there!"

As Julian passed a thick row of hedges, a painfully familiar voice pierced the air.

It was the voice that haunted his restless nights, the voice he desperately missed but was too cowardly to call.

It was Melody.

Julian stopped dead in his tracks.

Terrified he was hallucinating, he didn't dare step out into the open. He stood frozen behind a manicured, circular topiary, peering through the branches toward the sound.

And then, Julian laid eyes on the exact people he had spent all morning trying to track down.

A few people were flying kites on the main lawn. Melody had watched them with clear envy. Sebastian had quietly excused himself under the guise of finding a restroom and returned with a massive dragonfly kite.

The sun was bright, but the wind was fierce. A small child couldn't hold the spool, so the task naturally fell to the adults—or rather, it fell entirely on Sebastian.

Sebastian managed the kite, and Melody acted as his loud, enthusiastic commander.

She wasn't a fan of the kite just hovering smoothly. She ordered Sebastian to let it soar higher, then commanded him to pull it down, making the dragonfly dive and swoop erratically across the sky.

Sebastian indulged her every whim, executing her chaotic instructions perfectly, drawing out loud, echoing giggles from the little girl.

They had this entire section of the lawn to themselves. Melody ran wildly after the kite, sprinting forward and scrambling backward without a care in the world.

Every now and then, Sebastian would swoop down to scoop her up or spin her around.

Elara and Jocelyn sat on a picnic blanket a short distance away, smiling as they watched the chaos unfold.

It looked exactly like their old family picnics. Back then, Julian would run around with Melody, while Elara sat back with her phone, recording every precious second.

Right now, Elara was doing the exact same thing, her phone raised to capture the moment.

Jocelyn was recording too. Dissatisfied with the distance, she stood up with her phone, walking closer to Sebastian and Melody to get a better angle.
