Since his cover was blown, there was no point in hiding anymore.

Julian stepped out from behind the topiary.

Elara immediately went on the defensive. The second he revealed himself, she shot up from the picnic blanket and practically sprinted toward Melody.

Seeing her mother, Melody darted away from Sebastian and threw herself into Elara's arms. "Mommy!"

Elara wrapped her arms tightly around the girl, shielding her as if warding off a kidnapper coming to steal her most prized possession.

Julian: "..."

This was his own flesh and blood, yet she was treating him like a monster.

In all of Melody's life, Julian had never experienced this kind of rejection. Even recently, when Melody had been angry and throwing tantrums at him, she had never looked at him with sheer terror.

When she used to yell and throw things, it was because she still viewed him as her father. Deep down, she knew that no matter how much she acted out, her dad wouldn't actually hate her for it.

Back then, he was still a father she could forgive, a father she still loved. That was why she never actually tried to run away from him.

But now, Melody wasn't yelling. She wasn't throwing toys. She didn't say a single word. She just silently, desperately tried to get as far away from him as physically possible.

She was pulling away until he was entirely out of sight.

Julian felt as if an invisible vice had clamped around his chest, rooting his feet to the grass. He stood frozen, staring blankly at his daughter.

His lips parted slightly, but not a single sound came out. A suffocating wave of despair washed over him, poisoning his blood.
