Sebastian replied with a respectful nod, "Understood."
Samuel Vance's ravenous ambition had been glaringly obvious to Sebastian since childhood. Even without Maddox's warning, he had always kept his guard up.
Maddox studied him for a moment longer. The boy was a grown man now, capable of charting his own course. There was no need to nag him to death—if he were a failure, all the nagging in the world wouldn't fix him anyway.
Every generation had to forge its own path. Maddox couldn't pave every inch of the road for him.
He could offer shelter while he was still alive, but once he was gone, who would protect the boy from the storms?
He would have to rely on himself.
Maddox sighed deeply, clapping a weathered hand onto Sebastian's shoulder and giving it two firm pats. "Let's go."
"Alright."
Sebastian supported him with dutiful care. Right before they stepped out, he hesitated, then offered one final plea. "She doesn't know how I feel yet. She has her own complicated life to sort out and zero time for me. Please, don't try to intervene or investigate her."
Seeing how fiercely he protected the woman, Maddox bristled instantly, glaring at his grandson. "What? You think my word means nothing?!"
Sebastian quickly smoothed things over. "I'm just begging you to extend a little of that protection to her as well."
Sebastian knew his grandfather too well to believe the man lacked curiosity. He would absolutely dig into it.
Since the truth would inevitably come to light, it was better to lay the groundwork now rather than scrambling to do damage control later.
Having raised the boy himself, Maddox could read Sebastian like a book, but he simply didn't have the energy to argue anymore. "Enough, enough."
He waved his hand in annoyance. "I gave you my word, and I'll keep it. I won't touch her."
"But you," Maddox shot him a sideways glance. "You need to dial it back. Don't terrify the poor woman."
Sebastian: "..."
He was always incredibly gentle, wasn't he? How could he possibly scare anyone?
He felt a brief flash of indignation.
Still, securing Maddox's explicit promise lifted a massive weight off his chest.
After leaving the study, Sebastian didn't rush off.
Just as he had done for years, he personally helped Maddox through his evening routine, making sure he took his medication, and only left the estate after the older man was safely tucked into bed.
