Elara wasn't the least bit surprised by Sebastian's warning.
She had received highly similar intel from Gillian Thorne first thing this morning.
Unsurprisingly, it was all regarding the so-called divorce negotiations pushed by Julian's lawyer, Dominic Shaw.
Elara had already formally filed for divorce at the Shoreline County Courthouse. Although they hadn't gotten a court date yet, her subsequent Asset Freeze Petition had been approved, successfully freezing all accounts under Julian's name.
The upcoming legal battle was an undeniable reality; their top priority should have been gathering evidence for their defense.
Even if they wanted to settle out of court, they needed to come to the table with actual sincerity.
Yet Dominic contacted Gillian every single day, squeezing out concessions like toothpaste. Every time he offered a measly million or so—an act of profound self-congratulation—he acted as though he had achieved something monumental and brazenly demanded this and that from Gillian.
Only a battle-hardened leading counsel like Gillian could sit back and watch the circus without being offended by their sheer audacity. If it had been a younger, more hot-headed attorney, they probably would have been screaming at each other before the trial even began.
As a former lawyer herself, Elara saw right through their petty tricks.
She honestly just felt bad that Gillian had to put up with such shameless harassment.
While Melody was video chatting with Sebastian, Elara had been on her laptop messaging Gillian.
[Why don't we just block them?]
Elara suggested, [This insincere, time-wasting negotiation tactic definitely qualifies as harassment by now, doesn't it?]
Gillian, however, was entirely unbothered: [It's fine. Let them throw their tantrums. I'm screenshotting everything for the record.]
Impressed by her cool rationality, Elara returned to discussing the upcoming trial.
The divorce proceedings hadn't been scheduled yet, but the lawsuit against Vivian Winthrop was ready to go to court, so they needed to start prepping for that battle first.
When Sebastian's message came through, a single thought flashed through Elara's mind: *Just as I expected.*
After finishing her chat with Sebastian, Elara decided to forward the heads-up to Gillian anyway.
Just as she was about to hit send, the screen flashed, and an incoming call popped up. Elara's finger landed dead center on the 'Answer' button.
Elara was speechless.
She glanced at the screen; it was an unsaved out-of-town number, completely different from Vivian's.
Elara normally never answered unknown out-of-town numbers, especially from areas where she had no friends or family.
But since her finger had slipped and it felt rude to hang up immediately, she held the phone to her ear.
"Hello, is this Ms. Elara Sterling?"
The voice belonged to a man. It was deep, gentle, and sounded remarkably like a pre-sales customer service rep.
Elara paused, quickly running through her recent purchases, but found nothing that required pre-sales service. "Who is calling?"
"My name is Quentin Ward. I'm representing Ms. Vivian Winthrop."
The man smoothly introduced himself. "I'm calling primarily to discuss a potential settlement regarding your lawsuit against my client. Is this a good time?"
