While Elara felt a headache coming on, the man opening the door was entirely unfazed.
As if completely oblivious to her irritation, Sebastian Vance stepped back, tucked one hand behind his back, and offered a playful, sweeping bow. "Welcome home."
Elara remained silent.
"Mommy!"
Before Elara could even react to Sebastian's theatrics, Melody came sprinting out of the hallway, launching herself directly into Elara's arms. Elara had to quickly shift her focus, bracing herself to catch her daughter safely.
"Careful," she reminded gently.
"I knew Mommy would catch me!" Melody tilted her head back, beaming with absolute pride. "Welcome back!"
Any reprimand Elara had prepared melted away instantly. She stroked Melody's hair and smiled. "I'm home."
Satisfied, Melody let go of her waist and grabbed her hand instead. "Grandma already finished making dinner! Let's go eat!"
As Melody practically dragged her inside, Sebastian quietly shut the door behind them and followed the mother and daughter into the apartment.
Melody insisted on getting Elara's slippers herself. Not wanting to ruin her daughter's sweet gesture, Elara obediently stood by the entryway, waiting for the little girl to fetch them.
"Allow me to take your bag."
Sebastian had silently appeared right beside her. He offered his hand, palm up, the picture of polite, aristocratic charm.
Elara turned to shoot him a deeply suspicious look. Sebastian's eyes curved into perfect, handsome crescents. "I also offer coat-hanging services, free of charge."
Elara couldn't find the words.
Did he offer teleportation services too? Because she would love to teleport this relentless instigator straight out of her apartment!
When Elara didn't move, Sebastian didn't rush her. He patiently held his pose, waiting for her to concede.
They stared at each other for a long moment before Elara finally let out a defeated sigh, dropping her heavy work bag into his waiting hand. "Why are you here?"
By then, Melody had returned with the slippers, placing them at Elara's feet. "Hurry and change your shoes, Mommy!"
Sebastian took the bag. Seeing Elara reach for the shoe cabinet to balance herself as she slipped out of her heels, he swiftly shifted the bag to his left hand and offered his right arm to help steady her.
"I had some business to take care of in the area this afternoon, and I happened to bump into Melody and Jocelyn," he said, answering her question seamlessly.
Melody eagerly chimed in to fill in the blanks. "Sebastian played with me at the park!"
"And then Grandma invited him over for dinner!"
"Exactly." Sebastian looked down at Melody, playing right along. "Thank you both for the invitation."
Melody gave a happy, slightly bashful smile. Mimicking something she had seen on a cartoon, she waved her little hand dismissively. "Oh, it was nothing!"
Elara rolled her eyes.
She shot Sebastian a withering look. He knew perfectly well that wasn't what she was asking.
The man running a massive corporate empire was casually wandering around a neighborhood park? He could only fool a four-year-old child and a well-meaning grandmother.
Having swapped her shoes, Elara went to pull her arm back. Before she even flexed her muscles, Sebastian smoothly let her go on his own accord.
