Watching the elevator numbers steadily tick downward, Elara let out a massive sigh of relief, feeling as though she had just survived a war zone. She turned around and headed back inside.
"Mommy."
As the front door clicked shut, Melody shadowed her like a little duckling, asking in a hushed whisper, "Were you fighting with Sebastian just now?"
Elara paused in surprise. "Why would you think that?"
Melody tilted her head, thinking hard before answering with a touch of uncertainty. "I don't really know. It just felt like you guys were having a fight."
Elara let out a small laugh, realizing her own nervous tension in the hallway must have rubbed off on the highly perceptive child. "We weren't, sweetie. Mommy wasn't fighting with him. He just asked Mommy a very difficult question, and I had to think really hard about the answer."
Melody didn't overthink it, fully accepting the explanation. "Oh, okay! That makes me feel better."
Jocelyn had already finished cleaning the kitchen and retreated to her room to shower. Elara took Melody's hand and led her up the stairs.
As they reached the landing, Elara couldn't help but ask, "Were you worried that Mommy and Sebastian were fighting?"
"Yeah."
Melody gripped three of Elara's fingers, hopping up the next step as she answered with pure honesty. "I love you the most, Mommy, but I really like Sebastian right now too. If you guys fought, I wouldn't know what to do!"
Elara felt an unexpected pang in her chest.
Melody and Sebastian had only been interacting for a month or two. In that incredibly short span of time, he had somehow skyrocketed to a position of such high importance that he could genuinely put her daughter in a moral dilemma.
If a mother fought with a man they barely knew, shouldn't her precious daughter instinctively side with her without a second thought?
How was Melody actually torn over this?
