Elara stared at the screen.
No, she didn't know.
And she absolutely did not want to know.
Not even a little bit!
Elara highly suspected that Sebastian had strategically waited until he left to drop this bomb over WhatsApp.
If he hadn't been able to restrain himself and had said it out loud while waiting for the elevator, she would have rejected him without a moment's hesitation, given him a stern lecture, and buried the topic forever.
And if he had remained stubbornly persistent, refusing to listen to reason, Elara would have been forced to seriously reconsider allowing him in their lives.
Sebastian had likely figured that out, which was why he possessed the terrifying self-control to swallow the words in person.
Now that he was physically gone, sending the confession over WhatsApp meant it would permanently sit in their chat history. It wasn't something she could just pretend she hadn't seen—not unless she deleted it.
And even if she unilaterally deleted the thread, the record would still exist on Sebastian's phone.
Sebastian had banked on this exact loophole to utterly obliterate the delicate paper wall she had been so desperately trying to maintain, effectively killing any chance she had to play dumb.
He was dangerously cunning!
"Mommy?"
Because she had stopped abruptly, Melody was forced to pause on the step above her. The little girl turned around, looking down at Elara in confusion. "What's wrong?"
Snapping out of her daze, Elara instinctively shoved the phone into her pocket and shook her head at Melody. "Nothing."
"Let's go, time for your shower."
Melody could tell her mother was hiding something, but she could also clearly sense that Elara didn't want her to know what it was. Being a good girl, she didn't press the issue and simply nodded. "Okay!"
The mother and daughter continued up the stairs to their rooms.
Elara walked in a complete daze, her mind a million miles away. She barely registered a word Melody said, just offering mechanical "mhm"s and "okay"s to avoid getting caught spacing out.
Sebastian's perfectly timed confession had caught her entirely off guard. She hadn't even begun to formulate a response that would manage the fallout.
