"If you trip and fall, your chin is going to hit the stairs! You'll get hurt, and you'll bleed! Don't you know that?"
Elara stood there like a scolded toddler, perfectly still and obedient as she absorbed her daughter's lecture, not daring to utter a single word in her defense.
Whenever Melody demanded an answer, Elara nodded earnestly, silently assuring the girl that she was listening and taking it to heart.
Melody wasn't naturally talkative, nor was she used to giving lectures. She had simply been terrified and anxious watching her mom space out on the stairs, and that fear had fueled her little outburst. Having dumped all her immediate thoughts, her vocabulary quickly ran dry, and she came to a halt.
Elara peeked at her daughter through her eyelashes. Seeing Melody's brow furrowed tightly as she clearly struggled to think of more things to yell about, Elara's guilt multiplied.
"Melody."
Elara took a step forward, slowly crouching down to meet her daughter's eyes.
Melody looked up at her, making no move to pull away or reject the proximity. Seeing this, Elara smoothly dropped to one knee, bringing herself perfectly level with the little girl.
As their eyes locked, the secondary lecture Melody had been trying to piece together instantly evaporated from her mind.
"I'm sorry."
Thankfully, Elara didn't make her strain her brain to come up with more words. She offered a swift, decisive apology. "Mommy was wrong just now. It was my mistake. Can you forgive me this one time?"
Melody's fleeting anger immediately packed its bags and left the building, completely wiping out whatever she had been planning to say.
Elara noticed her daughter's temper cooling, but she also knew Melody was only letting it slide because she had apologized, not because she fully accepted the gravity of the situation.
Pretending not to notice the silent forgiveness, Elara pushed forward. "You were absolutely right. Whether we're outside or inside the house, we always need to watch where we're going. I shouldn't have been distracted and put myself in danger. I made a mistake, and I want to thank you for pointing it out to me. I truly apologize."
"Of course, I'm not going to force you to forgive me right this second."
"Since you were the one who caught my mistake, I am fully prepared to accept whatever punishment you think is fair. You can punish me however you want."
