Elara felt a profound sense of surrealism.

She almost expected the elevator to go down and immediately come back up.

It felt like unless he pulled some sort of terrifying stunt, he wouldn't be satisfied.

She watched the digital display tick down until it stopped at the basement level. After waiting two or three minutes with no sign of it returning, Elara finally let out a breath, taking Melody's hand and heading back inside.

If he was acting abnormal, so be it. She would cross that bridge when she came to it. There was no point in driving herself crazy trying to anticipate his next unpredictable move.

Still, Elara couldn't completely shake her caution. She fully expected a barrage of WhatsApp messages from him later that night.

Once inside, Elara spent some time playing with Melody before taking her to the bathroom to get washed up for bed.

"Mommy," Melody called out right as Elara tucked her in and turned to leave. She patted the empty space beside her on the bed.

Elara pulled back the covers and lay down next to her daughter. "What's wrong, sweetie? Did you want to tell me something?"

Melody nodded firmly against her pillow. She shimmied closer until her small body was securely tucked into Elara's arms, letting out a contented sigh.

"When you came home from work today, I helped Sebastian, but it wasn't because I don't love you."

The little girl buried her face in Elara's embrace, quietly explaining the misunderstanding from earlier that evening. "I just thought he looked a little pitiful. He did something wrong and didn't know how to apologize or make you happy again. So, I wanted to help him."

Elara had heard their little "conspiracy" loud and clear since they had discussed it right in front of her. She completely understood Melody's true intentions and had never once considered blaming her.

Elara thought the apology and reconciliation during dinner had put the matter to rest. She hadn't realized Melody was still fixating on it.

When a child had something weighing on their mind, forcing them to keep it bottled up without a clear answer would only breed anxiety and overthinking.

So, Elara didn't rush to respond. She waited patiently for Melody to finish.
