"Because..."
Melody started to answer but hesitated, swallowing the rest of her sentence.
"It's okay." Elara stroked her hair soothingly. "Mommy wants to hear the truth."
Melody gave a tiny nod, though she didn't confess right away.
She struggled with her thoughts for a moment before finally mumbling, "Because this afternoon, it felt like you didn't want me around him."
"When I was talking to him, you looked really unhappy."
Elara was speechless.
She hadn't been unhappy; she had been jealous.
Jealous that Sebastian had managed to earn Melody's trust in such a short amount of time, making her willing to approach him, confide in him, and even team up with him.
As her own family, they had spent a painstakingly long time getting Melody to trust them enough to open up.
Explaining this dynamic to her child felt more than a little embarrassing for a parent.
But Elara didn't hold back. She decided to be completely transparent. "I wasn't unhappy, and I definitely wasn't angry. I was just a little jealous."
"Huh?"
The concept of jealousy was still a bit foreign to Melody. "Why?"
Elara paused. "...Because you trust him. You trusted him faster than you trusted me and... the rest of us when you were younger. I felt a little disappointed, wishing I could earn your trust that easily too."
Melody squirmed, trying to sit up and look at her mother, but Elara gently held her down to hide her burning cheeks.
"Anyway, you just need to know that I'm not upset about you playing with him," Elara explained awkwardly.
Melody stopped struggling. Once she was absolutely sure her mother wasn't mad, she breathed a sigh of relief. Then she sought final confirmation. "So, can I still play with Sebastian?"
