Staring at Sebastian's rapid-fire texts, Elara's first reaction was a profound migraine. Here he goes again.
But a moment later, she realized something felt off.
His timing was wrong, and his tone didn't match his usual tactics.
She had never really known what the "old" Sebastian was like, nor could she accurately overlay the "kid" she remembered onto the relentless man currently pursuing her.
But based on their recent interactions, Sebastian was usually fiercely direct—bordering on arrogant. Yet, when he made a promise, he adhered to it meticulously and behaved perfectly.
He had maintained strict boundaries for nearly a month, successfully lowering her guard and earning a fragile level of trust. Why would he suddenly flip the switch and sabotage all his hard work?
Besides, the tone of his messages didn't feel like an aggressive demand; it felt more like he was pleading with her, almost like a puppy begging for attention.
Something was definitely wrong with him today.
Elara held her phone, falling into a thoughtful silence. She quietly deleted the cold rejection she had drafted and retyped: [I still have a massive pile of work to get through. I won't be done anytime soon.]
Sebastian instantly replied: [I can wait.]
Elara: [...My lunch break is going to be really short today.]
Sebastian: [We'll just eat.]
Elara was out of viable excuses.
She stopped replying, tossed her phone aside, and threw herself back into her work, determined to blast through her remaining tasks as quickly as possible.
Just as she was wrapping up, Sarah pushed the door open to invite her to lunch.
Elara suddenly remembered she hadn't warned Sarah. Skipping over Sebastian's strange mood, she casually mentioned she had lunch plans.
Sarah had heard Elara mention Sebastian before, but completely oblivious to their current romantic tension, she assumed it was just a casual visit. "We're practically done here anyway," Sarah said dismissively. "There's maybe an hour of busywork left this afternoon. Why don't you just take off early?"
Elara paused, rapidly calculating her workload. She could definitely squeeze it all in without needing the whole afternoon, but she felt slightly guilty. "Are you sure?"
"It's totally fine."
Sarah waved a hand, shooing her away. "We do this every year. It's tradition."
"Alright then. Let me just finish up this last stack."
