The moment this realization hit her, every lingering doubt Elara had about Sebastian's sudden outburst connected in her mind.
It perfectly explained why he had lost control, stopping at nothing—even using a half-threatening, half-pleading tone—just to insist she have dinner with him today.
Elara bit her lower lip in frustration, wishing she could swallow back all the careless words she had just said, or find a time machine to fix the casual attitude she had taken with him earlier.
How could she have been so dense?
Even if she hadn't remembered at first, or noticed Sebastian's unusual behavior, she should have caught on when she arrived at his house and saw the decor that completely clashed with his usual tastes. At the very least, when he mentioned that the interior design was what his mother had loved, she should have picked up on the clue and stopped herself from saying such ignorant things!
However, the damage was already done.
Elara couldn't take back her words, nor did she have a time machine to correct her behavior.
"I'm sorry."
After taking a moment to compose herself, Elara set down her silverware and looked earnestly at Sebastian sitting across from her. "I was careless. I didn't notice your mood in time, and I..."
"It's fine."
Sebastian also put down his fork, meeting her gaze with a faint smile. "I wasn't clear with you. It's perfectly normal that you didn't notice. Besides..."
He paused for a second before slowly finishing his sentence. His tone was calm, completely lacking the negative emotions Elara had feared. "My mother has been gone for over a decade. The only people who still remember her are me and Maddox."
Elara was left speechless.
She couldn't argue with that, nor could she think of anything better to say to comfort him.
She knew that every year on The Anniversary of Juliet's Passing, Maddox would spend the day either completely alone or with Sebastian, not even allowing Meredith to accompany him.
But she genuinely hadn't remembered the exact date of Juliet's memorial anniversary.
Sebastian said that only he and Maddox remembered, but in reality, Meredith likely knew too. She just wouldn't mourn alongside them, nor could she ever understand the devastating grief of an old man losing his daughter and a young boy losing his mother.
As for the Vance family...
Perhaps they knew too, but what did it matter?
Samuel had betrayed Juliet while she was still alive. He was the one who had driven her to her death. Would he ever mourn his late wife?
And as for Kendrick, Juliet was merely a former daughter-in-law who had served the family for a decade before ultimately bringing shame upon them. Would he ever honor the memory of a dead woman who had tarnished the Vance name and damaged their interests?
Elara highly doubted it.
