The knock echoed, and the door was quickly opened.
Seeing Sebastian standing in the hallway, the woman's face drained of color. She instinctively tightened her grip on the handle, keeping the door cracked only wide enough for one person, staring at him like he was a predator. "D-Do you need something?"
Sebastian looked down at her with freezing contempt. Without a single word, he held out a manila folder.
She looked at the folder in utter confusion, then back up at his face. "What... what is this?"
Still refusing to speak, Sebastian simply shoved the folder into her hands. "See for yourself."
She fumbled to catch it, opening her mouth to ask another question, but Sebastian had already turned on his heel to leave.
But he didn't make it far.
As he turned, a small hand suddenly clamped down on the hem of his jacket.
Penelope had slipped past her mother, squeezing through the crack in the door.
"Penelope!"
Her mother's heart nearly leapt out of her chest. She lunged forward to yank her daughter back, but Penelope refused to budge. Instead, she took a step closer to Sebastian.
Forced to stop, Sebastian looked down, his brow furrowing as he glared at the kid gripping his clothes.
Meeting his eyes, Penelope flinched slightly but didn't back down. Instead, she flashed him a sickeningly sweet smile. "Sebastian."
Sebastian's frown deepened into a dark scowl. "Let go."
Penelope instinctively loosened her grip for a second, but at the last moment, she tightened it again, shaking her head stubbornly. "No."
"Penelope, stop this right now!"
The kid wasn't scared, but her mother felt the lethal impatience radiating off Sebastian. She rushed forward, grabbing Penelope in a desperate hug and prying her fingers off the jacket. "He has a lot of things to do! Stop bothering him!"
This time, Penelope obediently let go, though she kept staring at Sebastian with deep reluctance. "Then when will you be done? Can I come find you when you're finished?"
Sebastian remained silent.
He and Samuel's family stayed firmly out of each other's way. Even when they crossed paths, they rarely spoke. Anyone with eyes knew he despised them.
But for some incomprehensible reason, Penelope had always wanted to be near him. Every time she saw him, she tried to get close, calling his name from miles away. No matter how brutally cold he was to her over the years, she was never completely terrified of him—she definitely feared him a little, but the fear never stopped her from trying.
