Elara stared at him coldly, showing zero mercy. "Forget about fighting for custody. I suggest you check yourself into a hospital and get a psych eval before it's too late."

With that, Elara pressed her thumb to the scanner. Just before stepping inside, something else crossed her mind. She paused, turning slightly to look at Julian. "You have exactly five minutes to get out of this hallway. If you aren't gone, I'm calling security to throw you out."

The moment the words left her mouth, she pulled the door open and walked inside without a shred of hesitation.

The heavy metal door slammed shut right in Julian's face with a deafening *BANG*.

The explosive sound violently jolted Julian awake. He slowly turned his head, staring in stunned, dumbfounded disbelief at the impenetrable door separating them.

He had come here to see his daughter, to bring her the Holiday Provisions she loved. Yet he had barely seen her for a minute, failed to hand over a single gift, and eaten a brutal slap to the face instead...

On the eve of Christmas Eve, the weather in Shoreline City had turned violently bleak. The entire day had been smothered in a sickening gray, heavy storm clouds pressing down on the skyline like a suffocating blanket, threatening to shatter at any second.

As dusk approached, a deafening crack of thunder tore through the sky, ripping the clouds wide open. Massive, heavy drops of rain came crashing down, violently battering the windows.

The hallway plunged into darkness before the motion-sensor lights violently flickered back to life.

In the jarring shift between light and dark, erratic shadows danced across Julian's face, illuminating the raw fury and devastating confusion warring in his eyes.

Another crack of thunder echoed.

Julian sluggishly raised his hand, his fingers grazing the right side of his face where Elara had struck him.

He winced.

It hurt like hell.

A stinging pain radiated from the corner of his mouth. When he touched it, he realized the skin had actually split, though thankfully, it wasn't bleeding.

Elara had hit him incredibly hard...

Yet, Julian didn't have the mental capacity to dwell on it.
