Meredith didn't know about Sebastian's new romance, nor did she understand why Julian was bringing it up out of nowhere. But years of mother-son intuition told her Julian had an ulterior motive, so she played along and feigned surprise.
"We know her?"
Meredith smoothly turned Julian's direct address to Maddox into a collective 'we'. "Which prominent family is she from?"
Feeling that wasn't enough, she beamed at Maddox. "Congratulations. Sebastian finally has a girlfriend. It looks like we'll be hosting a wedding soon."
Maddox stared blankly at the two of them putting on their little play. He didn't say a word.
Julian waited patiently. When it became clear Maddox wasn't going to take the bait, he couldn't hold back. "Aren't you even curious?"
"He'll tell me when he's ready," Maddox said dismissively.
Julian ground his teeth.
Ever since his only daughter had passed away, Maddox had practically given his descendants free rein. As long as they weren't breaking the law, they could do whatever they wanted. If they wanted to share something with him, they could; if they didn't, he wouldn't pry. If they needed his help, they just had to ask, and he would do his best.
That was exactly how he had handled Julian marrying Elara and starting his own business.
Julian used to be grateful for Maddox's hands-off approach, especially since his mother was so overbearing.
Now, he found it completely infuriating. If Maddox cared a little more, Julian wouldn't have to lay all this groundwork just to hit a brick wall.
Having shared a bed with Maddox for over a decade, Meredith was hyper-attuned to his moods. Hearing his tone, she knew he was annoyed. Maddox's demeanor hadn't changed, and Julian's insistence on pressing the issue was pushing his buttons.
