Because of Sebastian's interference, every elite divorce lawyer in the state had rejected him.

And the lawyer Elara had retained was Gillian Thorne, the most formidable litigator around.

If she wanted to, Julian had no doubt Sebastian would buy out every top-tier attorney just to serve her.

He couldn't rely on the Vance family to help him, and Julian was truly out of options. His only lifeline was Maddox.

Maddox looked as though the request hadn't entirely surprised him, but his gaze suddenly locked onto Julian. A flicker of profound, complicated disappointment flashed in his eyes.

Julian froze. He assumed Maddox was still angry about the shell company scandal. The fallout from that hadn't even fully settled, and now he was begging for more help, clearly irritating him.

"Sebastian calls me his uncle, and I've always treated him like a younger brother. I don't want a blood feud with my own family. I'm sure you don't want us tearing each other apart over an outsider either, right?"

Julian chose his words with extreme caution. "I just want an amicable divorce with Elara. I just want Sebastian to back off. That's all I'm asking."

Maddox remained silent, the disappointment festering in his chest intensifying by the second.

It was true that he stayed out of his family's business, especially their romantic entanglements. If they didn't bring it to his doorstep, he didn't pry.

But that didn't mean he was blind.

Take Julian and Elara's divorce, for instance. First, the massive scandal with the shell company, and then his blatant affair with the heiress of Winthrop Global. Neither incident was exactly kept under wraps. How could he not know?

Initially, Maddox thought Julian had just been temporarily blinded by lust, foolishly tossing aside the wife who had built his life alongside him.

But after speaking with Elara, he realized he simply didn't know his own stepson. He had grossly underestimated human greed.

That was exactly why he had decided to step in and help Elara.

Maddox had assumed that with the evidence piled high against him, the divorce and the asset division were set in stone. If Julian had a shred of decency left, if he cared at all about leaving a good impression on his daughter, he would have known when to fold.

Whether they settled out of court or left it to a judge, he should have mitigated the fallout so he could at least maintain visitation rights.

But Maddox never imagined that after he blocked Julian's access to top-tier lawyers to ease Elara's burden, the boy would be brazen enough to come begging him for help.

Maddox stared at Julian, scrutinizing him as if seeing him for the very first time.
