Maddox looked at him with withering disappointment. "Elara was the woman who stood by you when you built your business from the ground up. She is your legally wedded wife, the mother of your child."

"You destroyed this marriage with your infidelity. You are at fault. If it's over, you owe her the money, her dignity, and your absolute respect. You should not be trying to cheat her out of what she's owed."

As he had aged, Maddox rarely raised his voice. He spoke sparingly—partly because it was exhausting, and partly because young people despised being lectured by the elderly.

Having few descendants to begin with, he didn't want to drive them all away and end up alone, so he usually kept his opinions to himself.

Today, however, Julian had crossed a monstrous line. The sheer disappointment was sickening.

"You know perfectly well that a court ruling will destroy you, so you want to use 'good lawyers' and sheer power to crush Elara into surrendering, don't you?" Maddox continued.

The blood drained from Julian's face, but he couldn't formulate a single word of defense.

Maddox unclasped his hands and gripped the armrests of the sofa, preparing to stand.

Snapping out of her daze, Meredith instinctively moved to help him, but Maddox deflected her touch.

He gestured to the waiting butler, who immediately stepped forward and hoisted him to his feet.

"The outcome is set in stone. Instead of fighting a losing battle, you should quit while you're ahead."

"Leave a way out for your daughter—and for yourself."

With that, Maddox leaned heavily on the butler and walked away, not sparing the mother and son another backward glance as he retreated to his bedroom.

The sprawling living room fell into a deathly silence. Meredith and Julian were left paralyzed by the sofas, suffocating in a tomb of their own making.

Minutes later, Maddox entered his room. The butler pulled the door shut with a soft, definitive click.

To the two people frozen in the living room, that tiny sound hit like a sledgehammer to the chest.

Something vital completely shattered.

"Mom!"
