It seemed the universe actually listened to Elara's prayers.

Right up until nine o'clock that night, Sebastian behaved impeccably.

At exactly eight fifty-five, while Elara and her family were curled up watching the holiday broadcast, her phone buzzed. After a day of silence, Sebastian sent a WhatsApp message: [Go to the balcony in the study. Look out the window.]

It was a totally random directive, leaving Elara completely bewildered.

She typed back a single question mark.

His next message arrived immediately: [Fireworks at nine.]

Glancing at the time, Elara realized it was already eight fifty-six. She quickly grabbed Melody's hand and called out to Jocelyn. "Sebastian says there are fireworks at nine. Let's go watch!"

"Watch where?"

Jocelyn stood up, throwing a skeptical look at the wall clock. "It's four minutes to nine. Do we even have time to go anywhere?"

"The balcony in the study," Elara replied.

"The study balcony... Are they setting off fireworks by the river?"

Jocelyn still looked confused. "I didn't see any news about that."

Their new apartment was dead in the center of Shoreline City, where personal fireworks were strictly banned. However, the South Ling River lay a few miles to the southwest. The city typically orchestrated massive municipal firework displays there for major holidays.

But the weather this holiday season had been miserable. With relentless sleet and freezing rain over the past few days, the city council had officially canceled the Christmas Eve fireworks to prevent any accidents.

Up until dinner, there had been zero announcements regarding the river display. What were they even supposed to see from the balcony?

Sebastian's message had completely blindsided Elara. With the clock ticking, she hadn't had a second to process any of those details.

It was only after Jocelyn pointed it out that reality belatedly crashed over her.

By then, the three of them were already standing in the study.

Elara and Jocelyn stared at each other. "I'll ask Sebastian," Elara muttered.
