Elara was speechless.
He really didn't hold back.
As she buckled up, Sebastian pulled out of the parking lot, heading toward her apartment.
"You look happy."
Rush hour traffic meant stop-and-go driving, giving him plenty of time to study her reaction. "Good news on your first day back? Congratulations."
Elara shot him an exasperated but amused look. "Can't I just be happy to clock out after the holidays?"
Sebastian smiled. "Then, congratulations on clocking out."
Elara had no words.
She barely wanted to respond.
Sebastian dropped the teasing, his expression turning serious. "Whatever the reason, seeing you this happy is worth celebrating."
He paused. "If you're happy, I'm happy."
Elara looked away, resting her chin on her hand and staring out the window.
After a few seconds of silence, she couldn't help but ask, "Have I really looked that miserable lately?"
Was she so visibly distressed that a fleeting moment of joy was enough to make his day?
Was her state of mind truly that bad?
Thinking of this, Elara thought of Melody and Jocelyn.
