"Besides, her birthday isn't today. Elara and the housekeeper are there. Do you really need to be glued to her side every second?"
"Vivian is injured. You left her all alone in that apartment. What if she slips and falls?"
"I'll go over during the day to take care of her."
"Oh, just the day? And what about the mornings and nights? She's just supposed to fend for herself?"
Having just dealt with an aggressive Elara, facing his overbearing mother made Julian feel like his head was about to explode. Exhausted, he rubbed his temples and pressed his lips together in silence.
"Julian."
Meredith let out a sigh, her tone softening considerably. "I know you don't want to disappoint Melody, and I understand you wanting to spend time with her."
"But Vivian is injured right now. This is your perfect opportunity to step up and show you care. You can't just let it go to waste."
"It's a good thing she moved out and is living alone in that apartment now. The Winthrop family still doesn't know she's injured."
"If the Winthrops found out you left an injured woman home alone, what would they think?"
Meredith seemed to be busy doing something on her end. The rustling sounds through the phone were loud enough to be distracting.
Julian waited for the noise to die down before asking, "What are you busy with?"
"Packing my things so I can go take care of Vivian, obviously."
Meredith said it like it was the most natural thing in the world. "If you're so determined to play the good father, I'll just have to go take care of Vivian myself."
"Meredith..."
"That sweet girl didn't say a single bad word about you. She was so understanding, saying she didn't want to ruin your bond with Melody because of her injury, and begged me not to blame you."
"Since Vivian is already defending you, I naturally won't demand anything more of you. But she still needs someone by her side, doesn't she?"
"Then on the day of the birthday, Vivian will come with me."
Meredith declared straightforwardly. "If she won't let you bring Vivian, does she really think she can kick me out too?"
"..."
Julian's eyes immediately lit up. The dark cloud Elara had cast over him instantly vanished into thin air.
Of course! Why hadn't he thought of asking his mother for help?
Meredith disliked Elara. To avoid conflict and spare him the headache of dealing with mother-in-law drama, Elara had always remained completely docile over the years.
No matter how sharp the issue, Elara would always avoid it if she could. If she couldn't, she would either ask him for help or immediately apologize and yield, leaving him to mediate the fallout later.
If Meredith insisted on bringing Vivian, no matter how furious Elara was, she wouldn't dare make a scene to their faces!
