When Jocelyn Sterling asked about the Beckett family, she was really referring to Meredith Beckett.
Since Julian was a stepson, Maddox Beckett would indulge him as long as his requests weren't too outrageous, but the old man rarely went out of his way to pay attention to or meddle in Julian's affairs.
Only Meredith would sacrifice absolutely everything for her son.
She had never been happy with Elara marrying Julian; if they were to divorce and split up, she would probably be thrilled.
"I know," Elara replied.
Having already guessed as much, Elara saw no point in hiding it anymore. "The other woman is the heiress of a massive corporation. Meredith absolutely adores her."
"..."
It was an expected answer, and Jocelyn didn't show much of a reaction, though her eyes locked onto her daughter with deep heartache.
Elara was so incredibly calm about it, meaning she must have known for a long time.
When exactly had she found out, and how on earth had she survived this entire ordeal on her own?
"You..."
Jocelyn grabbed Elara's hand and squeezed it tightly, wanting to say something more but afraid of pressuring her daughter. Ultimately, it just turned into a soft sigh. "Why didn't you tell me anything?"
Her voice was thick with sympathy and the helpless frustration of not being able to protect her child.
A heavy lump formed in Elara's throat. She took a deep breath, forcing the burning tears back, and tried to sound as casual as possible. "By the time I found out, it was already a done deal. Saying anything wouldn't have changed a thing."
Jocelyn: "..."
She wanted to argue that she could have at least helped share the burden and brainstormed a solution.
But on second thought, her daughter had always been far more independent and decisive than her. Elara always knew exactly what she wanted and how to handle things.
Even if Jocelyn had known and rushed over, she might not have been able to help, and could have very well just added to her daughter's mess.
Jocelyn tightened her grip on Elara's hand, deciding not to ask anything else.
"Go get some rest," Jocelyn said softly, patting the back of her daughter's hand. "I brought some fresh ingredients from the countryside. I'll make a nice roast for dinner tonight."
Elara managed a small smile. "Okay."
She stood up, pushed her chair back to its original spot, and before leaving the room, turned back to give Jocelyn a tight hug. "Thanks, Mom."
No wonder the person on the other end was sending audio messages while his mother was typing her replies.
Meredith pulled Julian down to sit beside her. "Did you get everything settled at home?"
Julian nodded. "More or less."
Elara's mother came to visit a few times a year, so her guest room was always ready and only needed a quick tidy-up to be livable. There really wasn't much to settle.
Meredith stared at Julian and asked, "Are you going back tonight?"
"I have to."
Julian pinched the bridge of his nose in exhaustion. "Melody has been throwing terrible tantrums at me these past couple of days. If I let her down again, it's going to be a disaster."
"..."
Julian adored his daughter and hated seeing her upset. Knowing this, Meredith didn't push the issue, only offering a gentle reminder. "Then make sure you spend as much time with Vivian as possible this afternoon. Stay and have dinner with her before you leave. Please don't leave the poor injured girl to eat all by herself again."
With that, she stood up, grabbed her designer purse, and left Vivian's apartment.
