Jocelyn hadn't opened the second, smaller suitcase yet. She pushed it directly toward Elara. "This entire bag is full of clothes I made for Melody."

In her youth, Jocelyn had been a seamstress. With plenty of free time at home, she frequently bought fabric to sew clothes for her granddaughter, constantly pestering Elara for Melody's updated measurements.

Elara was genuinely stunned. "An entire suitcase full?"

"Every last piece."

"Melody is going to absolutely lose her mind with excitement when she wakes up and sees this."

"That's the idea."

Jocelyn finished hanging her own clothes in the closet. Seeing Elara about to leave with the suitcase, she called out to stop her, "What's going on with you and Julian?"

Elara froze for a split second, keeping her expression perfectly neutral. "What do you mean?"

"Don't play dumb with me. I have eyes. I can see it."

"..."

"Are you two fighting?" Jocelyn pressed.

Elara smiled bitterly and shook her head. "No."

Jocelyn stared at her daughter unblinking. After a heavy silence, she asked, "Is he seeing someone else?"

Elara's heart skipped a painful beat, but she didn't want to worry her mother. Feigning shock, she said, "Mom, you're writing a movie script."

"You know exactly what I mean."

Jocelyn gave her daughter absolutely zero room to play dumb. "Even though Julian was already a teenager when I started working for the Becketts, I still took care of him for years. The two of you have been together for so long that I practically watched him grow up. I can spot a change in him."

Elara silently admitted that her mother's intuition was as sharp as ever, but she kept her mouth shut.

She didn't agree, but she didn't deny it either.

Jocelyn continued, "In the past, whenever we met, no matter how much stuff there was or how heavy it was, he would instantly take over. You were always the one walking away empty-handed with me. But this time..."

"Not only did he not help with the luggage, but he spent the entire walk glued to his phone, texting someone. He didn't seem the least bit welcoming of my arrival."

"He could claim he was working, but the look in a man's eyes and his actions don't lie."

His wife and child were right in front of him, but Julian's eyes and mind were entirely somewhere else.

Seeing her daughter's unsettlingly calm reaction, Jocelyn immediately knew her guess was dead-on. She was even more furious that Elara had tried to cover it up. "If I hadn't asked, how long were you planning to hide this from me?"

Elara pulled a chair over next to Jocelyn and sat sideways, resting her arms on the backrest. "I didn't do it on purpose."

"I just... didn't know how to tell you."

Jocelyn glared at her. "More like you never planned on telling me at all."

"Even if you knew, you'd just be anxious for no reason."

"And you think figuring it out myself makes me any less anxious?"

"..."

Elara had no idea what to say.

Her mother was only supposed to be here for a few short days and would head back to her hometown right after Melody's birthday. Elara genuinely thought she could keep it under wraps until then.

Who could have guessed she would see through it the absolute second they met?

The two sat in a heavy silence. After a long moment, Jocelyn finally let out a defeated sigh and asked, "Do the Becketts know?"
