The student who had asked a question shrank back into his chair, cheeks flushed in embarrassment.
A young man appeared at the doorway and called out, “Mr. Jones.”
Theodore stepped outside to meet him. The instant the class saw the intimidating professor leave, a collective sigh of relief filled the room.
The student who had just been scolded raked a hand through his hair and muttered bitterly, “Seriously Mr. Jones plays favorites. He would gently tell female students to approach him if they had questions, yet when it came to me, he simply told me to work it out on my own first.”
He dropped his forehead onto the desk and complained to his deskmate, “If this major didn’t guarantee such good job prospects, I wouldn’t touch it. Just thinking about how he’s known for being ruthless-and how every senior class got pushed to the point of tears-makes me wonder why I signed up for this.”
“Lower your voice. What if he hears you?”
“Being a girl must be nice. No matter how strict a teacher is, they always go easier on them.”
Ava heard every word from behind her, yet she kept her head down, pretending not to notice as she focused on her notes.
Gabriel glanced at her. Seeing her expression unchanged, he said, “Don’t let it bother you. They’re just envious. Mr. Jones has always had a reputation for being strict and serious, but there’s no denying he’s incredibly accomplished.”
He continued, “If you manage to stand out to him, the graduates say that even a brief recommendation from him-something as simple as ‘I’m Theodore, and this is my student-is enough to get you hired on the spot. Employers won’t even bother with those tricky interview questions.
“Even without a recommendation letter, just being known as one of Theodore’s students carries a lot of weight. That’s why our department-especially this major-has such a high employment rate.”
Ava lifted her gaze. “Thanks for explaining.”
Gabriel rubbed the back of his neck. “No worries. By the way, you can just call me Gabriel.”
“Alright, Gabriel. Class is about to start.”
Over ten minutes later, Theodore finally returned and resumed the lecture where he had left off.
When class ended, the student who had intended to ask more questions lost his nerve. He packed up quickly and slipped out.
Theodore called out to Ava, stopping her. She paused and waited quietly.
The others noticed Ava being held back. They didn’t know why, but drawing Theodore’s attention rarely

meant anything good.
Afraid they might be next, the rest of the class rushed out in a hurry.
Gabriel gathered his belongings, gave Ava à brief look, and followed the others.
In moments, the large classroom was left with only Ava.

Theodore approached her and said, “My teaching style is pretty relaxed. Whether you read the textbook or not is up to you-it’s not particularly useful anyway. Come to my office after lunch.”
Ava nodded quickly. “Understood, Mr. Jones. I’ll be there around twelve-forty.”
Theodore smiled faintly. “I heard you were recognized as an outstanding trainee during military training. Not bad-you’ve got real endurance.”
He added. “Go grab something to eat.”
Ava gave a small bow before hurrying out.
It was 11:50 a.m. when she headed to the cafeteria. As soon as she arrived, Zoey spotted her and waved eagerly. “Ava, over here! Hurry!”
Ava joined her and sat down. “How did you get here so early?”
Zoey grinned. “I slipped out ten minutes before class ended. Told the teacher I had a stomachache and needed the restroom-he let me go.”
Ava went to line up at the student counter. Her eyes drifted toward the faculty section beside it—and suddenly stopped.
