Once they left the classroom, Keith turned to her and asked, “Are you going straight back to the dorm, or do you have plans?”

Ava looked up at him. “What about you? Are you heading home?”

Keith’s gaze lingered on her for a moment. “Walk around campus with me first.”

As soon as he finished speaking, he reached into his bag, took out a mask, and put it on. Then he added a pair of sunglasses.

Ava stared at him, amused by how completely he had disguised himself. “You…”

Keith looked completely calm. “You were the one who didn’t want people finding out about us yet. I’m following your lead. This way, no one will know it’s me.”

Ava nodded. “Fair enough.”

So the two of them strolled through the university with no destination in mind, hands clasped together as they went. A few students who passed by gave Keith strange looks because of the mask and sunglasses, though none of them paid enough attention to stop.

After a while, Ava slowed down and glanced toward a bench nearby. “Let’s sit for a bit.”

They took a seat by the roadside. Hardly anyone came down that path, and those who did only passed through in a hurry.

Keith removed his sunglasses and turned toward her. The night breeze carried a faint floral scent, cool and gentle against the skin.

“The annual welcome gala is coming up soon. I’ll be there too. What’s your class preparing?”

The moment that topic came up, Ava frowned. “Please don’t remind me. Not one of the guys in our class volunteered, and in the end, our class advisor pushed the whole thing onto me.”

The bitterness in her voice made Keith smile. “You don’t like performing?”

Ava let out a sigh. “It’s not that I hate it. I just think most people would rather sit in the audience and watch than be the one up there. There are so many people in our class, and somehow they still couldn’t come up with one person.”

Keith looked entertained by her frustration. “Then maybe you should just handle it yourself.”

Before Ava could respond, he went on, “The welcome gala has always been a chance for freshmen to make an impression. At Starry Heavens University, there’s pretty much an unspoken rule. If a class has only a few girls, public performances usually get pushed onto them.”

Ava lifted a brow. “That seriously happens?”

Keith’s smile deepened slightly. “I’m actually looking forward to seeing what you do.”

Ava nearly choked on her own thoughts. So that’s what this is. No wonder those guys back off so fast. They’ve been planning all along to shove me onto the stage.

After resting there for a while, Ava stood. “Come on. I’ll walk you over.”

Keith’s light armored vehicle was parked in the school parking lot. The two of them headed that way side by side, fingers still laced together.

“Ava!”

A familiar voice called out from not far away.

Noelle had spotted her from across the road. The instant she noticed the tall man beside Ava, the truth seemed to click into place. That had to be Ava’s boyfriend.

She stood where she was, smiling so hard it looked like her face might split. She clearly knew not to interrupt, so instead of going over, she only waved enthusiastically from the other side.

Ava waved back and then mentioned to Keith, “She’s also in the Agriculture Department, but not in our class. Her name is Noelle Lane, and she’s really fun to be with.”

Keith lowered his gaze to her. “I’m glad you’ve met people here who get along with you.”

Later that night, after Ava returned to the dorm, she found a message from Noelle on her Holoband.

“Girl, that was your boyfriend tonight, wasn’t it? I couldn’t see his face with the mask and sunglasses, but just from the way you two looked together from behind, the vibe was amazing.

“Hurry up and send me the pics.

“I snapped a few shots from behind, and wow, they came out so well. You two seriously have such a good vibe together.”

Ava checked the time and saw that the messages had come in about half an hour earlier.
