The moment it happened, Ava’s whole body tensed. Her mind blanked, and unease hit her instantly. She braced a hand against his arm, trying to stop him.
“Ava…” Ryan called softly, his voice low and intimate.
The confined space inside the car seemed to heat up all at once, saturated with his scent.
Her strength was nowhere near enough to push him away.
A chill shot through her as she watched him move closer, about to kiss her.
Then-
a sharp crack.
A thin branch lashed across his face. Green leaves brushed over his mouth, and the vine kept growing, winding around his jaw before crawling higher over his face.
In the next instant, thorns burst from the vine and pierced his skin. Blood welled out immediately.
The pain snapped Ryan back to himself.
He looked down and saw Ava trapped against him, one of his hands still locked around her waist.
He sobered up all at once. He let go as though he had been burned. “I… I…”
The green vine drew back quickly.
Ava looked at him, her expression difficult to read.
Ryan raised a hand to his face and touched something wet. When he looked at his palm, it was smeared with vivid red.
His own blood.
Ava said quietly, “That was my companion plant. It thought I was in danger.”
As she spoke, her gaze landed on his face. Several puncture wounds had opened there, and they looked alarming.

Ryan stared at the blood in his hand for a long while. “Did I scare you? I don’t even know what I just did. Ava, I’m sorry…” His voice was unsteady.
His thoughts were still in disarray, and he could not understand how he had crossed that line.
Ava let out a quiet breath. She opened her hand and spoke to the companion plant, “I overreacted a little. I’m alright.”
A pale green glow flashed.
A second later, the wounds on Ryan’s face vanished completely, as though they had never been there.
Ava pushed open the car door and stepped out. “I’m going back. You should head home early.”
It was then that Ryan finally reacted. He shoved the door open and jumped out after her. Looking at her back, he called in panic, “Ava!”
“Ava, I’m sorry. Can you not be angry with me?”
“I drank too much. I didn’t even know what I was doing.”
If he had been sober, he would never have acted that way. His chest twisted painfully.
He had never wanted to corner her like that. If he used alcohol as an excuse, then what made him any different from the disgusting men who hid behind drunkenness after crossing a line?
“I’ll admit it,” Ryan said, voice rough. “I do like you. I want to be close to you. I want to stay by your side. But not like this. I don’t want to become this kind of person while I’m not even in my right mind.”
He pressed a hand against his chest. It felt unbearably tight there. “Ava, I know anything I say right now probably just sounds like an excuse.”
Ava stopped walking, but she did not turn back.
She only said, “Go home first. Be careful on the road. I’m not angry at you. My thoughts are a mess right now. I just want to be alone for a bit.”

He got back into the car, shut the door, opened his Holoband, and called Ethan.

“Ryan?” Ethan took one look at his face and immediately asked, “Did you send Ava back to school?”
Ryan frowned hard. “Ethan… I think I messed everything up.”
Ava ran all the way back to the dorm without stopping.
During that run, countless thoughts had flashed through her mind. Now, sitting on the couch, she could hear her own heartbeat pounding violently in her ears.
The truth was, she had been avoiding a problem this entire time.
She had not wanted to touch it. She had definitely not wanted to face it.
Her Holoband kept vibrating with incoming video calls. Ava glanced at the screen.
Ryan.
Ethan.
Neither call was answered.
She pulled the Holoband off and tossed it onto the couch, then got up, took her sleepwear, and went into the bathroom.
She needed time.
She needed to think properly.
