Ava placed a steaming plate of ravioli in front of him, her lips curving into a soft smile “For the birthday man-dig in. Ravioli symbolizes abundance and fulfillment, a wish that your life will always feel whole and rewarding. That’s my birthday blessing for you.”

Keith lowered his gaze to the handmade dish before him, clearly touched. Picking up his utensils, he said, “Then I definitely have to taste it–especially since you made it yourself.”

Ava slid her own smaller portion onto the table and sat down. “Trust me, it’s delicious, I don’t cook for just anybody.”

By the time dinner ended, night had fully settled outside, wrapping the world in darkness. Keith stayed behind to clean the kitchen, while Ava wandered to the window, quietly gazing out into the moonless evening.

Keith approached her from behind and stopped at her side. “What’s caught your attention?”

She turned slightly and smiled. “Nothing really. Just standing here to help digest.”

A grin spread across his face. “I’m thinking of starting a bonfire. Do you want to join me?”

Without hesitation, Ava agreed, and together they headed outside.

Soon, flames danced brightly in the firepit, while the beach lights flickered on one by one, illuminating the shoreline and pushing back the night.

The two walked side by side along the sand, the sound of waves filling the silence between them. After some time, Keith glanced at her and asked, “May I have a dance with you tonight?”

Ava froze for a split second before memories of her coming-of-age party resurfaced. She laughed, unable to hold it back, then nodded. “Alright. I’d love to.”

Keith raised an eyebrow, amused by her reaction. “What’s so funny?”

Still smiling, she replied, “I was just thinking about my coming-of-age party. I never shared the first dance with any of you.”

Keith chuckled as the memory returned. “So you remember that? You rejected every single one of us and chose Ms. Severn instead.”

Ava’s cheeks warmed with embarrassment. “I was dealing with a lot back then. Dancing with any of you felt impossible. And honestly, choosing one would’ve upset the rest. Mrs. Jones felt like my safest option.”

Keith’s expression softened. “I’m sorry. We didn’t understand what you were going through.”

She shook her head gently. “It’s alright. That was then. Give me a moment-I need to change. Our first dance deserves more than this casual outfit.”

She selected a dress from her wardrobe-still daring, though the crossed straps offered more coverage this time. After fixing her hair and applying subtle makeup, she reluctantly settled for slippers, lacking proper shoes.

By the time she stepped back outside, Keith had changed as well. Beneath the warm glow of the lights, he stood waiting, holding a bouquet in his hands.

He walked toward her and presented the flowers.

Ava accepted them, inhaling their fragrance before looking up in surprise. “When did you even get these? How did I not notice a

thing?”

Keith smiled knowingly. “A surprise only works if you don’t see it coming.”

Cradling the bouquet, Ava beamed.

Keith’s gaze lingered on her dress-the one he had chosen, It fit her beautifully, making her look effortlessly stunning.

In the short time she had been gone, the atmosphere had transformed. Twinkling lights hung nearby, and gentle romantic music drifted through the night air.

Ava placed the bouquet down and noticed a modest birthday cake resting quietly nearby.

So despite everything, he really hadn’t planned much for himself. What should have been his birthday celebration felt far more like

an intimate date.

She looked at him playfully. “So, what comes first-cake or dancing?”

Keith cast a glance at the cake and shrugged. “Honestly, after that ravioli, I don’t have room for anything else.”

Ava laughed softly. “Same here.”

He switched on a slow love song and said, “Next time, I’ll make sure you have proper shoes. I threw this together too quickly.”

She smiled teasingly. “You seriously expect heels on sand? Absolutely not. They’re exhausting. Unless it’s absolutely necessary, I avoid them.”

Keith bowed slightly, extending his hand toward her with theatrical elegance. “Well, my princess, may your devoted knight request

this dance?”
