The boy sitting in one row ahead suddenly spun around to face them. “You two are both gorgeous-you really don’t need to sit here hyping each other up!”
Malory laughed. “We were having a conversation. Were you eavesdropping?”
“How is that eavesdropping? You weren’t exactly quiet. Everyone in this room could hear you-even the people in the back row caught every word,”
His expression sharpened into a skeptical arch of a brow, drawing attention to the metallic glint of three studs aligned along the lobe and a fourth industrial piercing driven through the cartilage.
Every detail of his attire adhered to a polished, contemporary aesthetic-a visual language that sat in jarring opposition to the traditional, ink-stained world of a painting and calligraphy society.
Malory blinked. “I was basically whispering. I wasn’t that loud.”
He smiled. “I’m just giving you a friendly warning. Whisper all you want, but if it’s something private, keep it out of the classroom-and out of earshot of guys. Even someone who isn’t trying to listen might catch a word or two. That kind of thing gets awkward fast.”
Malory let out a small “oh,” then asked, “What’s your name?”
“The name’s Lucas,” he said.
“That’s a nice name you’ve got. I am Malory, a first-year student,” Malory said.
Ava watched the two of them talk, keeping quietly to herself without a word.
Ava made her way to sit in Felix’s calligraphy class on Thursday afternoon.
When Troy spotted her stepping through the door, he waved and gestured to the empty seat beside him. “Ava, over here. I saved you a spot.”
Scanning the room, she recognized almost every face-all students she’d seen in Felix’s elective before, with a handful who also belonged to the painting and calligraphy club.
She gave Troy a small nod.
She’d always thought well of him, so she crossed the room and settled into the seat he’d held for her.
Troy gathered the items he’d used to reserve the spot and moved them back to his own desk.
Professor DuPont should be coming any minute. Did you bring a brush? You’re welcome to borrow one of mine, Troy said.

“Thanks,” Ava replied. “I brought one.”

As she spoke, she pulled her things from her bag-not just the brush, but a bottle of ink as well.
Her eyes drifted to the impressive row of brushes lined up on Troy’s desk, and a smile crossed her face. “Quite the collection you’ve got there.”
Troy touched his nose sheepishly. “A bad craftsman with too many tools-that’s me. My calligraphy skills honestly aren’t very good.”
“But your painting skills are exceptional,” Ava said. “And with Professor DuPont guiding you, by the time graduation rolls around, you’ll probably be one of his standout students.”
Troy smiled at that, a small, sharp fang peeking out at the corner. “Professor DuPont is a true master of both disciplines. It’s a real honor just to study under him.”
The two of them had an easy conversation, as though no one else were in the room. To anyone watching, it was clear that Ava’s warmth toward Troy was something she didn’t extend to many others.
More than a few students shot Troy sideways glances.
None of them could work out what Ava saw in someone so unremarkable. His mental power sat at Rank A -squarely average, the sort of male student who seemed unlikely to distinguish himself by any conventional measure.
Before long, Felix entered the classroom. His eyes found Ava almost immediately, and he smiled. “Ava, you made it today. Good. Let’s get started.”
Following a concise lecture on specialized fundamentals, he moved to the sidelines, leaving the remaining hours for individual application. As Troy tilted a bottle to fill the stone reservoir, Ava spoke up with polite haste. “There’s no need-I came prepared with my own ink,” she clarified, attempting to forestall the
gesture.
