Once everything was settled, Ava and Ryan said their goodbyes to Bennie and left, not wanting to impose any longer.
Holding the box close, Ava listened as the separated kitten cried continuously, likely distressed from being away from her mother.
She reached inside and gently stroked its tiny head with one finger. “Your mama trusted me with you, so from now on, I’ll love and protect you.”
Looking down at the kitten, Ava smiled thoughtfully. “What should I name you?”
She turned to Ryan. “We should give her a name. Help me think of something.”
Ryan chuckled helplessly while focusing on the road. “You’re asking the wrong person. I’ve never owned a pet before, so I have absolutely no idea.”
Ava sighed with a small laugh as she rubbed the kitten’s soft fur. “This is my first time too, so I’m clueless myself. Let’s wait until later. For now, we should get her everything she needs.”

Afterward, they drove back to Ryan’s home in Crescent Bay.
The moment they arrived, the pair busied themselves unpacking and arranging the kitten’s new belongings, while their tiny new companion continued meowing endlessly.
Ryan poured food into a small bowl and commented, “New environment, unfamiliar scents. She’ll probably spend the whole night crying.”
As evening approached, Ava looked around and asked, “Is there a grocery store nearby? Let’s pick up ingredients and cook dinner together.”
Ryan awkwardly scratched his head. His kitchen had always been more decorative than practical. “There’s a large supermarket close by, but… I should warn you, I seriously can’t cook.”
Rubbing his nose sheepishly, he admitted, “I’m hopeless in the kitchen. Back in school, I failed cooking class every single time.”
Ava gave him an amused look. She hadn’t expected him to cook in the
him to cook in the first place. Honestly, Keith’s cooking abilities had already been surprising enough.
“I’ll handle dinner,” she said. “You can just assist me.”
Ryan’s face lit up instantly. “Wait, Ava, you can cook? That’s amazing. Let’s go get groceries right now-I’ll gladly help.”
