“Queenie!” Jerome stepped forward and caught her by the chin. “Enough. Rodney was out of line this time. I’ve already spoken to him.”

Then, he turned toward Rodney. “Why are you still standing there? Apologize. Get her to let this go.”

Rodney’s jaw tightened.

It was the first time in Ava’s life she had ever seen someone do something so vile and still manage to act as though he were the wronged party.

He had injured his own wife so badly that she ended up in the hospital, yet somehow he was still blaming her for not being accommodating enough.

Ava’s fists clenched painfully. She could not stay silent any longer.

“Do you hear yourself?” she shot back. “You hurt her like this and still think you get to complain? What kind of husband are you? You don’t protect your wife. You brutalize her, force yourself on her, beat her, and put her in the hospital. What exactly does that make you?”

Rodney exploded. “Shut your mouth!”

He swung his hand up as if to strike her.

Before it could land, a blade of wind flashed through the air, vicious and razor-sharp, carrying enough killing intent to freeze the room.

If Rodney had reacted even a fraction too slowly, his entire hand would have come off. Even so, the cut across his wrist was deep enough to expose bone. Blood sprayed instantly.

Ava laughed coldly. “The one you owe an apology to isn’t me. It’s her.”

Rodney slowly turned toward Queenie on the hospital bed.

His neck looked almost rigid with resistance. He had no intention of apologizing. The hatred in his eyes was almost venomous, but Queenie smiled.
