That night, Ava barely managed to fall asleep, her rest constantly broken and uneasy.
The following day at school, Queenie’s condition still lingered in Ava’s thoughts. After finishing her evening elective, Ethan arrived to pick her up and drove her straight to the hospital.
When Ava reached the ward, Queenie had already regained consciousness. She lay motionless on the hospital bed, her expression blank and distant, like lifeless still water.
Seeing her like that left Ava momentarily speechless. No comforting words seemed adequate or meaningful, and deep down, she knew Queenie had endured something truly horrific.
Ethan remained seated outside in the corridor, choosing not to enter the room with Ava.
Ava broke the silence first. “Queenie, would you like something to eat? The nurse mentioned you haven’t eaten anything all day.”
Queenie turned her head slightly toward Ava, shook it faintly, and whispered, “Ava, thank you for saving me. Without you, I probably wouldn’t be alive right now.”
Her voice was rough and strained. Ava immediately poured a glass of water and handed it to her. “Don’t think about anything else for now. Just concentrate on recovering. Those responsible won’t escape the law.”
Queenie didn’t resist. She used both hands to steady herself, propping up into a half-sitting position, and took a couple of small sips from the glass.
Her eyes then drifted to a man’s suit jacket in the room. “Besides you… who else brought me here?”
Following her line of sight, Ava noticed the jacket as well. “It was Professor Sebastian Montclair from the Law Department. When I found you last night, I couldn’t reach your emergency contact. Later, I found his business card and called him.
“He was still on campus, so he came over immediately and helped me bring you here. The police arrived afterward to take statements. He told me to head back first while he stayed to deal with everything.”
Queenie’s gaze dimmed slightly. “So, it was him… and that jacket…”
“It belongs to Professor Montclair,” Ava confirmed.
“Queenie, you really need to recover quickly. If you need help, he said he’s willing to assist you,” Ava added carefully.
Noticing Ava’s cautious tone, Queenie let out a faint, tired breath. “It’s fine, Ava. I’m not dead yet. Something like this won’t break me.”
“Queenie!” Ava leaned in and gently wrapped an arm around her shoulders.
Queenie understood the concern behind the gesture and lightly patted Ava’s hand. “Don’t worry about me. I’m not that easily shattered.”

Just then, the door turned open, and two men stepped into the room.

Ava didn’t recognize their relationship to Queenie, so she studied them cautiously, her brows slightly furrowed.
Apparently surprised to see someone else there, the ash-gray-haired man spoke first. “Queenie, you’ve got company?”
As he finished speaking, he stepped inside and closed the door behind him.
The other man, younger with greenish-brown hair, stood nearby with his hands in his pockets. He remained silent, his face tight with visible irritation.
Queenie’s gaze swept over the two of them, a faint, cutting sarcasm flashing across her eyes. “Came to if I was dead?” she said coolly. “Sorry to disappoint you both-I’m still very much alive.”
“Queenie, are you angry with us? I’m sorry. I only heard about it this morning and rushed over immediately,” the ash-gray-haired man said as he approached the bedside.
He leaned forward slightly, concern on his face, and reached out as if to touch her cheek, but Queenie quickly avoided his hand.
“Queenie,” he called softly, his tone controlled. “Stop acting like this.”
His expression looked gentle, but his eyes held no warmth at all-only a cold, unsettling emptiness.

Ava stepped in, her voice firm but polite. “Sir, if you’re here to visit a patient, please keep your voice down. She needs rest.”
The man shifted his attention from Queenie to Ava. “I’m her husband. Not some random visitor.”
Ava studied him closely, disbelief rising in her expression.
This man is Queenie’s husband?
His wife has just gone through something so traumatic, yet he stands there completely composed. Not a single word of comfort comes from him since he walked in. His indifference feels unsettling, almost cold.
A man like this… is actually Queenie’s husband?
“Leave,” Rodney suddenly stepped forward, clearly trying to push Ava out.
Ava frowned. “And who exactly are you to order me around?”
“Because I’m her husband too,” he replied sharply, his patience visibly thinning.
“Even if you are, that doesn’t give you the right to kick me out,” she shot back without backing down.
“Oh?” His expression darkened further. “Queenie, do I not have the right to ask her to leave?”
Queenie immediately took Ava’s hand and looked at him with open disdain. “She’s my friend. Neither of
