The realization dawned on Guron’s mind with a terrifying, bloody clarity. He adjusted his cuffs, his jaw clenching as he looked out toward the perimeter gates. "The underground syndicates... the Borens. They must have executed this strike. Jannah is already being fought for at the highest biological level. They have already erased her grandfather from the board to cut off her escape routes, and soon, very soon, they will come for her under our roof."
Guron snapped his head back toward his son, his eyes flashing with a sudden, intense urgency. "Did you manage to mark her earlier? Tell me the pheromone bond is sealed."
"I didn’t," Dorrent muttered, his voice full of a bitterness as he looked away. "The girl is incredibly complicated, Father. I tried to sink my teeth into her scent gland, I tried to force the frequency integration, but the mark wouldn’t take root. It seems she cannot be marked unless her mind is willing to comply with the bond."
Guron let out a harsh, barking scoff, his face twisting into a look of profound irritation. He took a sharp step forward, his large hand suddenly reaching out and gripping Dorrent’s collar with an iron strength, jerking his son forward until their faces were inches apart.
"I doubt she will ever be willing to accept your mark, Dorrent! Not with what I have just heard from your mother!" Guron hissed, his voice trembling with a furious bewilderment. "I was profoundly shocked to learn that nine years ago, during your unstable black cycle rut, you were the one who brutally slaughtered her parents in the 3rd Street gutters! That is the exact reason why the girl looks at your face and sees nothing but a monster! That is why she hates you so bad!"
Dorrent’s jaw locked, a sharp vein pulsing violently against his temple as he looked into his father’s eyes. "I was also completely shocked when I heard that fabrication from Mother’s mouth," he delivered through his teeth, his breathing turning ragged. "I have no memory of those three days of blackout. And now... now she is completely against this entire marriage layout."
"We can understand your mother’s hysteria," Guron replied, his grip on Dorrent’s collar tightening even further, his knuckles digging into his son’s chest. "Her younger brother, died because he was helplessly infatuated with that exact same biological lineage. What we have to do right now, Dorrent, is ensure we do not anger her further. But more importantly, you need to listen to me very carefully."
