He shifted slightly, wrapping his arms around her narrow back to pour even more of his heat into her shivering frame. The soothing warmth spread rapidly through her skin, chasing away the painful chill that had settled in her bones, but Jannah refused to be touched by him. She squirmed against his hard grip, her hands digging into his shoulders.
"Let me go!" she hissed, her eyes flashing. "You are just using this whole stupid situation as an excuse to hold me! You’re taking advantage of me!"
"As much as I love holding your body right against mine," Dorrent murmured, his chest rising against hers, "I am not taking advantage of you. My body really needed to balance its temperature, and right now, yours does too. Can’t you just let me hold you like this until we reach our destination?"
"I am not comfortable in this position at all!" Jannah spat, refusing to relax even a muscle as she leaned her head back to avoid his hot breath. "It’s disgusting!"
Dorrent let out a chuckle, his eyes flashing with an arrogant, knowing glint. "I know you’re not comfortable, Jannah," he whispered, leaning his face closer until his lips almost touched the side of her neck. "How could you be comfortable... when your bare skin is right next to the only man who makes you feel things you can’t control?"
"You perverted monster!" Jannah cursed, her face burning.
She looked down at his chest to push him again, but her eyes suddenly caught something that made her freeze.
The bandages that had been wrapped tightly around his chest and ribs were gone. But there were no wounds underneath. Where bullet holes and bruised flesh should have been, there was only smooth skin with faint marks that were rapidly disappearing before her eyes. He was almost completely healed.
Dorrent caught her staring at his chest. A subtle smirk played at the corner of his lips. "Are you wondering how I healed so fast?"
Jannah quickly jerked her gaze back up to his eyes, trying to hide her surprise behind a wall of cold indifference. "I am not wondering about anything," she snapped defensively. "You are an S-tier Alpha after all. Your body heals like a freak. It’s nothing special."
She went quiet for a moment, resting her chin slightly above his shoulder because her body was still too exhausted to fight his arms. As the silence stretched inside the car, a troubled thought slipped through her guard before she could stop it.
"If... if your body is still recovering and you’re not feeling well," she muttered, keeping her voice flat and cold so it wouldn’t sound like she cared, "then why are you forcing yourself to go on this stupid mission into the slums today? Can’t your people handle it without you?"
Dorrent’s smirk widened. He raised a hand and gently ran his fingers through her messy hair, brushing it away from her forehead.
"Don’t worry your pretty little head," Dorrent replied smoothly, his tone full of confidence. "Your lover is more than strong enough. A tiny relapse won’t affect this mission at all." He tilted his head, watching her closely. "Besides... if you’re really this worried about me, you shouldn’t tag along with us into the slums. Stay back and rest."
Jannah’s pride flared up instantly. She pushed against his chest with all her strength, glaring down at him. "I told you a hundred times, I am NOT worried about you! And I AM coming along! That is final!"
Dorrent looked at her intense, fiery expression for a few seconds. Finally, he gave a slow nod and loosened his grip around her waist.
"Alright," he said quietly.
Jannah didn’t waste a second. The moment his hands lifted, she scrambled off his lap and moved as far away from him as the seat allowed. Her heart was beating frantically as she pulled her clothes back on, buttoning with fast, trembling fingers. Dorrent calmly sat up, pulling his own trousers back on and slipping his arms back into his shirt, not bothering to button it up all the way.
