Before she could react, Dorrent reached out, effortlessly scooping her up into his arms like a feather. He carried her around to the passenger side, placed her firmly into the front seat, shut the door, and locked it electronically before she could even reach for the handle.
He smoothly climbed back into the driver’s seat, pulling the sports car out of the driveway and onto the main estate road.
Dorrent glanced sideways at her, his hands gripping the steering wheel. "You know... you’ve definitely added some weight, Jannah."
Jannah’s head snapped toward him, her dark eyes flashing with pure annoyance. "You are completely delusional! I still weigh the exact same!"
"When was the last time you actually weighed yourself, little physician?" Dorrent asked smoothly.
Jannah clamped her mouth shut, turning her head away to glare out the window as the city lights blurred past in the dark. Silence stretched inside the luxurious cabin for several long minutes before Jannah’s anxious thoughts got the better of her.
"Where the hell are you taking me in the middle of the night anyway?" Jannah muttered, her voice laced with suspicion. "I hope it’s not some creepy, abandoned place."
"You’ll see when we get there," Dorrent replied calmly, his eyes fixed on the road ahead.
Jannah shifted uncomfortably in her seat, her fingers lightly gripping the edge of the dress. A sudden thought crossed her mind, casting a shadow over her face. She looked at his sharp side profile, her tone dropping into a quiet, hesitant register.
"Aren’t you... aren’t you afraid that the people hunting for me will ambush us out here? Won’t they try to harm you?"
Dorrent’s hands tightened slightly on the steering wheel. A deep, quiet wave of warmth washed through his chest. He felt the true meaning hidden beneath her prickly words—she was genuinely worried about his safety.
Dorrent slowed the car down slightly, flicking his eyes over to her flustered face. "I really like you, Jannah," Dorrent delivered softly, his deep voice carrying a profound, absolute weight. "I didn’t just say that earlier to make you lose control. I truly, deeply like you."
Jannah froze. Heat rushed straight to her face, her heart doing a frantic, chaotic dance against her ribs. She quickly looked down at her lap, keeping completely quiet as her cheeks burned.
Dorrent noticed her extreme hesitation, a subtle, arrogant smile touching his lips. "What about you, little physician? Do you feel a single thing for me?"
"No!" Jannah said loudly and immediately, her voice trembling as she kept her gaze pinned on her hands. "Not at all! Never!"
Dorrent chuckled low in his throat. "Okay. A woman’s ’no’ usually means ’yes’ most of the time anyway."
"I am not just ’a woman’!" Jannah snapped back fiercely, her pride flaring up. "I am Jannah Nenth!"
