Chapter 18
Ashley explained. Jake said, “My idol, Ella, the top Asian female racer, is racing tonight! I can’t miss it! I promise I’ll go home after the race! Don’t worry
about me!
“But…”
Many people shouted, “Ella!”
Jake ignored Ashley, shouting with the crowd, using binoculars to watch the starting line. Ashley was surprised.”Since when are you interested in racing?”
I wasn’t before! But Ella is so amazing! You’ll understand when you see her! Everyone loves her!”
Ella appeared. Jake shouted excitedly, forgetting Ashley. Ashley hadn’t eaten dinner. Seeing his enthusiasm, she decided to wait until the race ended before taking him home.
He gave her the binoculars.
Look! Number 38! In red! So sexy and wild!”
Ashley wasn’t interested in racing.
She looked through the binoculars, freezing.
Ella was Tanya! She knew Tanya did extreme sports, but she didn’t know she raced and was so popular. Tanya was in a crimson racing suit, looking sexy, elegant, and wild. Ashley accidentally looked towards the audience and saw Chase. He was completely captivated.
Ashley’s grip tightened. The race was about to begin. Jake took back the binoculars. Ashley was still looking at Chase. Sam and his friends were there too, cheering for Tanya.
Cars sped past. Jake took the binoculars.”Look! She’s amazing!”
Ashley looked at Tanya, who skillfully overtook another car in a sharp turn. The crowd cheered.
She knew nothing about racing, still, she was impressed and captivated.
She finally understood why Chase fell for Tanya.
Ashley noticed that even Chase showed surprise and admiration. Sam and Ethan jumped up. The race intensified. Jake took back the binoculars. It seemed that he didn’t see Chase.
The race paused; Tanya was in first place. Ashley asked for the binoculars.
Jake exclaimed, “You’re captivated too! I told you, everyone loves her!”
Ashley smiled faintly.
She wanted to call Chase. She knew he’d probably hang up.
But she decided to do it anyway- one last time.
She called Chase, then watched him through the binoculars.
Then, she saw him hang up and return his attention to Tanya. His eyes were only on Tanya.
Ashley took a deep breath, smiled, and returned Jake the binoculars. She stopped watching the race and Chase.
The race ended; Tanya won, Jake and his friends wanted autographs.
“But I hear Ella is from a rich family and she has a doctorate. Racing is just one of her hobbies. She doesn’t need fans and rarely gives autographs.”
“Yes, this is a private race, but there’s a VIP passage for the racers and we can’t get in.”
They heard Tanya had left to celebrate. Lily called Ashley again. Refusing Jake’s request to stay and celebrate, Ashley insisted on taking him home.
Before leaving, Ashley went to the restroom. She bumped into someone and apologized simultaneously. It was Zark Green, another friend of Chase’s.
He was even colder than usual.
Ashley noticed that. She’d known Chase for ten years. Chase and Zark had been close friends since childhood. They studied, worked, and socialized together.
Chase never introduced her to his friends, so she and Zark were acquaintances at best. However, Chase had introduced Tanya to Zark and the other friends. Tanya celebrated birthdays with them; they watched the race together. It was like she was one of them.
Zark and Chase’s other friends had become colder towards Ashley.
She’d tried to befriend them, but they just ignored or scorned her, so she gave up. She walked past, but Zark stopped her.”I didn’t know you were interested in racing. His tone was cold; he suspected she was following Chase.
She turned back. “What do you want to say?”
Zark wasn’t ashamed of being seen through.”I just don’t think someone like you would like racing. I’m curious.”
“Someone like me?” Ashley stared at him.”Mr. Green, we’re not close. You don’t know me. If you think you do, tell me who I am.”
He always thought she was a duplicitous person. She might look quiet and shy, but if fact she was cunning and manipulative. She set him up to marry her but never admitted it.
