Madeleine, who had been shielded by Rebecca the whole time,
composed herself.
She spoke up, “Take me to see Zoe.”
“You?
What do you want to see her for?”
“Whether you believe it or not, I won’t hurt her. In a way, we’re
both victims.”
Of course, Camryn wouldn’t believe these words.
It wasn’t just him; even Rebecca was a bit confused.
But since Madeleine was so serious, Rebecca had to go along
with her, stepping forward and grabbing Camryn’s clothes.
“Lead the way.”
The long hallway of the mental hospital was cold and silent, the smell of disinfectant mingling with an indescribable sense of
oppression.
Chapter 110
Camryn walked in front.
“It’s this room.”
He stopped in front of the room at the end of the hallway, his
voice hoarse, “After her episode last week, she was moved to
the intensive care ward.”
Rebecca frowned and looked at the warning sign on the door.
“High–risk patient, restricted visitation.”
Madeleine’s expression was cold and firm. Through the small
window on the door, she saw a thin girl sitting on the edge of
the bed with her back to the door, mechanically fiddling with a
cloth doll.
“Get someone to open the door.”
Rebecca said to Camryn.
Camryn hesitated for a moment, “She’s been very unstable
lately. Seeing strangers might…”
“Open the door.”
This time it was Madeleine who spoke, her voice soft but firm.
Chapter 110
Camryn didn’t know what they were really up to, but he could
see they didn’t intend to harm Zoe. After a moment’s thought,
he went to get a nurse to open the door.
The sound of the key turning in the lock was jarring in the
empty hallway. The moment the door opened, the girl by the
bed went rigid, then slowly turned her head.
“Ah!
7
!”
Zoe let out a piercing scream, and the cloth doll fell to the floor.
She scrambled backward frantically until her back hit the wall,
trembling all over. “Don’t come any closer, don’t come any
closer!”
Madeleine froze where she stood.
Zoe’s eyes were bloodshot, staring straight at them.
Then she screamed again and crouched on the floor, howling
something sharp and muffled.
But Madeleine understood.
Chapter 110
She was shouting: I’m useless now, why won’t you let me go.
Camryn was worried about Zoe’s condition. He rushed in, held her, and whispered soothingly.
Soon, she calmed down under his comfort.
Madeleine’s hands and feet were cold. She wanted to talk to
Zoe alone.
“No way. It’s too dangerous for you to be alone with her.”
Rebecca rejected Madeleine’s request without a second
thought.
She crossed her arms and said irritably, “I’m the one who
brought you here. If I can’t take you back in one piece, do you
think Roderick will let me off the hook?”
“It’s fine. I can protect myself.”
After speaking, Madeleine forced a smile.
Rebecca didn’t stop her anymore. She turned to call a doctor,
who came and gave Zoe a sedative.
Before leaving, she saw Camryn was unwilling to go, so she impatiently went over and grabbed the fabric of his shoulder.
Chapter 110
“Relax, she’s not going to eat your girlfriend.”
Once everyone was out, Madeleine’s gaze fell on Zoe again.
Under the effect of the medication, Zoe was no longer shouting.
She sat on the floor, hugging her legs, her eyes vacant.
Madeleine walked over to her and sat down, mimicking her
posture.
“Zoe, do you remember me?”
Seeing no reaction, Madeleine continued, “I’m Madeleine. You
don’t remember?”
After a moment’s thought, she added, “Then do you remember
Edward?”
The name Edward was like a switch. Zoe’s previously vacant
eyes suddenly focused.
“Ed…ward…”
“Yes, Edward.”
Madeleine’s eyes lit up, and she quickly pressed, “You still know
him, right?”
Chapter 110
Zoe slowly turned her head and stared at Madeleine for a
