Chapter 300
This wasn’t a guess out of thin air.
Madeleine’s past, irrational “obsession” with Edward, and the
way she clearly avoided and distanced herself from him after
she came to her senses, was strange enough on its own.
If some “unconventional” force was at work, Edward was
undoubtedly the biggest connection.
Madeleine’s body went rigid!
Even her quiet sobs stopped instantly.
She looked up in terror almost immediately.
Even in the dark, Roderick could feel her pupils dilate and that horrified “how could you possibly know” shock.
He’d guessed right.
Roderick clearly felt the terror that nearly burst from Madeleine
in that instant.
Her stiff body, her silent, sharp intake of breath, told him
everything.
He had guessed right, and this connection terrified her more
than anything she had admitted before.
Edward.
He was the key, just as he thought.
But he couldn’t ask any more questions.
To keep pressing for details would be like pouring salt on her
bleeding wound.
She had already been through enough.
It was enough.
Knowing the problem was with Edward was enough for him.
“Okay, I won’t ask about this anymore.”
Roderick immediately stopped, his tone unwavering, as if that
earth–shattering guess had just been a casual remark.
He pulled her trembling body fully into his arms again, his large
hand gently patting her back as if soothing a frightened baby.
“It’s all in the past, don’t think about it.”
His voice was low and steady, carrying a force that could quell
any storm. “I won’t ask anything else. You’re safe now. You’re
safe with me.”
။
He no longer tried to dig for the unbelievable truth, instead
focusing all his attention on calming her frightened emotions.
He repeated “It’s okay,” “Don’t be scared,” “I’m here,” over and
over, using his steady heartbeat and warm embrace to tell her
that whatever it was, it couldn’t break through his protection to
harm her now.
Under his extremely patient and gentle comfort, the terror that
had nearly burst from her chest finally began to subside.
The feeling of surviving a disaster drained her of all strength,
and she went limp in his arms.
“Ricki…”
“Hmm?”
“I’m so glad you’re here.”
Her voice was a little choked up. “If I had to face this alone, I
don’t know… what I would have done.”
Chapter 300
Roderick held her, resting his chin lightly on the top of her head.
“Silly girl, I would never let you be alone.”
To have and to hold, till death do us part–that was the promise
they made back then.
Roderick always kept his word, especially when it came to
Madeleine.
He gently patted Madeleine’s back, coaxing her to sleep, but his
mind was racing.
Edward.
All the clues pointed to him.
Madeleine’s past abnormal “obsession,” her current extreme
fear, all those “risks” and “taboos” that couldn’t be explained by
common sense… the core of it all was Edward.
Whether it was some strange obsession, an unresolved grudge,
or something even beyond his comprehension… it didn’t matter
anymore.
What mattered was solving the problem, and that meant
starting at the source.
To sever the fear that entangled Madeleine and kept her up at
night, to pull everything back on track, he had to start with
Edward.
Roderick’s eyes turned completely cold, like tempered ice.
It seemed he needed to pay him a proper, thorough visit.
He would completely eliminate the last and largest shadow
looming over Madeleine’s life.
Gently kissing Madeleine’s sweaty forehead, Roderick
whispered softly:
“Sleep. Everything will be okay.”
“I promise.”
Enveloped in Roderick’s reassuring presence, Madeleine’s
consciousness gradually faded as she sank into a troubled
sleep.
Her dreams were bizarre and fragmented.
