She took a deep breath, wiped her tears, her gaze becoming incredibly firm.
No matter what she had to face, no matter how powerful the
so–called “narrative control” was, she would not back down.
Since Roderick dared to defy fate for them, she would also fight
with everything she had to protect him and their home.
With that thought, Madeleine slowly stood up and walked
toward Edward’s hospital room.
The only sound in the hospital room was the beeping of the
machines.
Fiona sat by the bed, looking down at Edward, and that dense,
suffocating feeling surfaced once again.
She gave a bitter smile.
Just as she thought, no matter when, the moment she saw
Edward, she would inevitably fall for him.
Even though she had already seen through him, this man would

never give her the love she wanted.
Wasn’t what she wanted a pure love, like what Roderick had for
Madeleine–unreserved, without the power dynamic of a
superior to a subordinate?
These were things Edward clearly couldn’t give her.
Tears welled up for some reason, and Fiona raised a trembling hand to wipe them away.
“You… you’re crying?”
Edward had woken up at some point, looking at her weakly, his
voice a bit hoarse.
Fiona was startled by the sudden voice, quickly turning her face
away to wipe the tears. When she turned back, she had forced a
smile as if nothing was wrong.
“You’re awake?
How are you feeling?
Does anywhere else hurt?”
She avoided his question, her tone deliberately distant and
polite.
Chapter 333
Edward didn’t answer, just looked at her deeply. Those eyes
that had once captivated her, though weak now, still held an
indescribable pull, as if they could see right into her heart.
“Were you crying for me?”
His voice was low, with a hint of uncertainty, and a trace of…
perhaps it was her imagination, softness.
Fiona’s heart leaped, as if it had been scalded by something.
She denied it instinctively, “No, you saw wrong.
It’s… it’s just that my eyes were bothering me a moment ago.”
She stood up, wanting to get him a glass of water to escape his
overly focused gaze.
“Fiona.”
But he called out to her softly. The name, coming from his lips,
carried a long–lost intimacy that made her heart ache.
Fiona’s steps faltered. With her back to him, she secretly dug
her nails into her palm.
“I know… I might have done some things wrong lately.”
Chapter 333
Edward’s voice was tired and held a rare confusion. “A lot of
things… seem to have gone wrong.
But seeing you here, I feel… a little more at ease.”
His words were like a feather, lightly scratching at the emotional
walls Fiona had worked so hard to build.
See, this is how it is. He could always, with just a few casual
words, make her hard–won determination waver.
She took a deep breath and turned around, her face having
regained its usual composure, even holding a faint hint of
sarcasm:
“You’re joking, Mr. Carroll. You’re just unwell. Abraham notified
me, and I came to check on you out of courtesy.
You should get some rest. The doctor said you need to
recuperate in peace.”
She placed the glass of water on the nightstand, her
movements crisp and efficient, and didn’t look at him again.
“If there’s nothing else, I won’t disturb you.”
After saying that, she picked up her bag and turned to leave.
Chapter 333
She was afraid that if she stayed a second longer, she would be
drowned again by that damned, uncontrollable emotion.
“Don’t go!”
Edward suddenly reached out and grabbed her wrist.
His grip wasn’t strong, it was even a little weak, but the cold
touch and the sudden movement still made Fiona freeze.
“Stay with me for a little while… just a little while.”
