Chapter 39
Nanette carried the boy towards her. When Kevin saw
Madeleine, his expression shifted, becoming unreadable.
“Mrs. Livingston.”
Nanette smiled, not putting the child down.
“So you are home.”
Madeleine frowned slightly. “Why did you pick up Kev?”
Nanette sighed, feigning regret. “The kindergarten called. The
driver came for him, but he refused to leave. He wouldn’t speak.
They had no choice but to call me.”
Madeleine’s heart sank. She looked at her son.
Their eyes met, but he quickly looked away, seemingly unwilling
to look at her.
Guilt flooded Madeleine’s heart.
“I see. Thank you.”

Madeleine nodded, then looked at Kevin.
“Kev.”
Kevin didn’t move.
Madeleine persisted patiently. “Can I hold you?”
There was still no response.
Nanette’s smile widened slightly.
Having been Kevin’s psychologist for so long, she understood
his psyche better than anyone.
He craved his mother’s love and attention, but he was an
independent person, too.
Once hurt, he would retreat into his shell like a snail.
Whatever reason Madeleine had for trying to repair their
relationship, it clearly wasn’t straightforward.
In Kevin’s heart, Nanette was the most trustworthy one.
“Mrs. Livingston, I really think you should…”
“Mommy.”
Chapter 39
Nanette’s words caught in her throat. The boy in her arms had suddenly called Madeleine “Mommy” in a muffled voice.
She pondered, “But wasn’t he angry?
“Forgave her so quickly?!”
Madeleine was also stunned. She had worried he would be too upset to forgive her.
And yet, he’d only ignored her for a few moments…
Without delay, Madeleine reached out her sore, aching arms
and took her dear son.
She thought, “Oof… So heavy.
“Kirsten’s nutritious meals were certainly effective.”
The moment he was in her arms, his small hands clung tightly
to her neck, as if holding onto something precious, refusing to
let go.
“Thank you, Dr. Clark.”
Madeleine gave Nanette a generous smile.
She knew her son trusted Nanette, so she wouldn’t cause a

scene in front of him.
“I’ll update my contact details with the kindergarten. No need to
trouble you anymore.”
“Mrs. Livingston.”
Nanette’s smile faded. She glanced at Kevin, hesitating to
speak her mind.
Madeleine understood. She looked down at Kevin.
“Kev, can you go inside first? I need to talk to Dr. Clark for a
moment.”
Usually obedient, Kevin now stubbornly shook his head.
This was the first time Madeleine had seen him openly oppose
a request.
She could only smile apologetically at Nanette.
“I’m sorry, Dr. Clark. We’ll have to talk another time. I need to
attend to my son now.”
Nanette’s expression tightened.
She had hoped to use this perfect opportunity to put Madeleine

in her place, to show her who Kevin really trusted.
But Kevin wasn’t cooperating.
She thought, “What is wrong with him?
“I’ve given him so many psychological cues on the way here…”
“It’s fine.”
Nanette masked her frustration with a smile.
“I didn’t have much to say anyway. I’m just glad Kev is home
safe.”
“I’ll have the driver drive you home.”
“No need, I can manage.”
Nanette meant it as a polite gesture, but Madeleine
immediately agreed.
“Alright then. Have a safe trip.” She then smiled at the driver
nearby. “Mathew, you can clock out now.”
Nanette’s composure nearly cracked.
Clenching her fists, she bid Kevin a gentle goodbye and

conceded defeat, stepping away from the Livingston’s villa.
Madeleine’s arms and thighs screamed in protest, her brow
furrowed tightly, as she carried Kevin inside.
Seeing his mother’s pained expression, Kevin ‘grew alarmed.
He slowly withdrew his hands and asked timidly, “Mommy, do
you hate me now?”
“Hmm?”
