Even a child had taken notice.
Emotion tightened her throat. She sniffed hard.
“Don’t worry, Kev. Mommy won’t upset your grandpa anymore.
We’ll both take good care of them, I promise.”
Harold emerged from the kitchen with Buffalo wings and crispy
calamari, just catching her words.
He stopped, his eyes instantly reddening.
All four stood emotionally charged when Minerva returned from
school.
Taking in the scene, she scratched her head awkwardly.
“Should I be crying too?”
The question broke the tension, bringing relieved laughter.
“Crying? Harold made all your favorites! Come eat!”
As the family settled around the table, Madeleine’s phone

buzzed before she could take a bite.
A voice message from Mary played accidentally, her high-
pitched voice filling the room.
“Maddie! Golf this weekend! Edward will be there. I’ll find you
something stunning to wear. Guaranteed success! I’ve even
booked you a room for afterwards…”
The voice echoed unexpectedly through the room.
Madeleine froze, feeling the weight of everyone’s eyes turning
toward her.
Harold slammed his fork down, his face immediately flushing
crimson as he struggled to keep his voice low.
“Madeleine! What is this?”
“How could she be so shameless, talking about her affair right
in Kev’s face? Does she even remember she’s married, and
she’s a mother? Perhaps our decision to let her marry Roderick
was a mistake from the start!” he wondered.
Beside him, Clarissa wore an expression of shock and deep
sorrow, placing a calming hand on her husband’s arm.
Chapter 42
Her gaze held nothing but bitter disappointment.
“Our daughter is truly beyond hope,” she thought.
Next to Madeleine, Kevin looked terribly worried, ready to fetch his grandfather’s medicine.
“No, no, it’s not what you think!”
Madeleine waved her hands in frantic denial, feeling utterly
trapped.
She was at a loss for how to explain, especially with Kevin
present.
“Damn that Mary and her big mouth!” she cursed in her heart.
“Mom, Dad, please, it’s a misunderstanding. That person is just
talking nonsense.
“I don’t have feelings for Edward anymore. Why would I ever…
Ugh, please believe me. The amnesia is real.”
Any lingering belief her parents might have had evaporated with
that voice message.
“Maddie, you finally bring Kevin home for a meal, and this is
how you treat us?”
Chapter 42
Clarissa sighed wearily.
“Harold and I are getting older. We can’t handle these dramas
anymore.”
She shook her head in resignation. “I’ve been thinking… If you
truly can’t make it work with Roderick, then just get a divorce…”
“Mom?”
Madeleine’s eyes widened in disbelief.
“Did they give up on me completely?” she wondered.
She wanted to argue further, but noticed Kevin trembling
slightly beside her, clearly affected by Clarissa’s words.
“Kev.”
Madeleine quickly pulled him close.
“Don’t be scared. Mommy and Daddy aren’t getting divorced.
Your grandma was just joking.”
She turned to Minerva. “Mina, could you take Kev to the other
room for a bit? I need to talk to your aunt and uncle.”
Once they were gone, Madeleine faced her parents with grave

seriousness.
“Mom, Dad, I’m not lying. Roderick took me to the hospital for a check–up today. They didn’t find anything physically wrong… But my point is, I genuinely have no memory of the last eight years.”
Her defense felt weak even to her own ears.
She never imagined her parents would distrust her this deeply.
She knew it wasn’t their fault. Her actions over those years had
broken their hearts.
“I don’t know what happened. It’s like I was possessed these past few years. I can’t even stand the person I became.”
A bitter smile touched her lips.
“My memory of Edward stops when our family sponsored him. Dad said he was a rare talent, that we could offer him a job
after graduation.”
She took a shaky breath.
“I never thought he’d become such an ingrate.”
“Maddie…”
Chapter 42
Clarissa stared at her, astonished.
