Chapter 66
She shoved Edward away, stumbling back two steps until her
back hit the cold wall.
“Enough!”
Her voice trembled, the bangs on her forehead already soaked
with cold sweat. “Edward, don’t be so full of your…”
Before she could finish, the sound of hurried footsteps
approached.
Roderick strode closer, holding Kevin. The moment he saw the
two of them, his steps came to an abrupt halt.
The air seemed to freeze.
Madeleine saw Roderick’s gaze suddenly turn cold. The eyes
that always looked at her with such tenderness were now like
ice.
She opened her mouth to explain but found her throat was too
dry to make a sound.
“Daddy,” Kevin suddenly spoke, his small hand clutching
Chapter 66
Roderick’s collar. “It’s Mommy…”
The child’s innocent voice broke the dead silence.
Roderick closed his eyes, and when he opened them again, he had regained his composure.
He strode forward and pulled Madeleine behind him with one arm, his movement assertive yet gentle.
“Are you okay?”
he asked in a low voice, his fingertips gently brushing against
Madeleine’s cold wrist.
Madeleine shook her head, subconsciously grabbing his sleeve.
She could feel Roderick’s body was tense, like a fully drawn
bow, yet he was still restraining himself from lashing out right
there.
When did he get here? Did he see everything?
Does this mean he doesn’t believe me?
Madeleine’s mind was clogged with questions, but the words
just wouldn’t come out.
Chapter 66
Edward saw Roderick’s murderous glare and raised his hands in
a shrug.
“Mr. Livingston, your wife was the one who threw herself at me.
If you don’t believe me, there should be security cameras here.”
“You’re right, Mr. Carroll.”
Roderick gritted his teeth. “There are cameras here. I’ll be sure
to investigate thoroughly how Mr. Carroll just so happened to enter this haunted house at the same time as my family.”
Roderick’s low words helped Madeleine collect her thoughts.
That’s right, why was Edward here? And how could he have
shown up in the haunted house with them so coincidentally?
This doesn’t make sense!
“Are you following me?”
Edward scoffed. “Me, follow you?
What a joke.”
That’s what he said, but in the dim light, his expression was
visibly ugly.
Chapter 66
Edward thought this was insane. Her eyes couldn’t lie, and he
could clearly see there was no love in her gaze as she looked at
him.
But he didn’t believe someone could change so quickly.
She’s faking it.
He was sure of it.
Her desperate struggle to get out of his arms just now was
probably because Roderick had shown up.
If Roderick wasn’t here, if it was just the two of them…
Edward’s heart tightened. He realized something was off with
him today. He used to get annoyed every time he saw her, so
what was wrong now?
Looking at her fair skin and delicate features, he was surprised
to feel a flicker of anticipation about being with her again.
He was interested in Madeleine?
No way. What a joke!
Edward felt irritated. He knew he shouldn’t have come. He
tugged at his tie, ready to leave.
Chapter 66
He turned to leave, but then whipped back around and mouthed
to Madeleine, “Nice act.”
Madeleine was trembling with anger when she felt Roderick’s
warm hand on the small of her back, steadily supporting her.
Roderick’s icy gaze met Edward’s, and a murderous intent
flared in both their eyes.
The haunted house, already blasting the AC, felt even colder
now.
“Can you walk?”
Roderick asked in a low voice, and the concern in his eyes
made Madeleine’s nose sting.
She nodded, and Roderick started walking out, holding his son
with one arm and shielding her with the other.
His broad, straight back completely separated her from Edward,
like an unbreakable barrier.
