Chapter 97
Edward’s eyes widened, then he pulled his lips into a mocking
smile.
“Now you’re just being unreasonable.”
He slowly and deliberately adjusted his cuffs. “Business is war.
Survival of the fittest is the law of nature. The Mosley Group
was poorly managed and its capital chain broke. What does
that have to do with me?”
Madeleine rolled her eyes so hard they nearly flew out of her
head, then decisively held out her hand to him.
“Then pay up.”
Edward’s expression froze. He was so surprised he thought
he’d misheard.
“What did you say?”
“I said, pay up!”
Madeleine raised her voice. “You climbed up by stepping on my family, and once you got to the top, you kicked us away. Mr.

Carroll, you’ve forgotten where you came from.”
Edward’s gaze turned cold, and his long fingers secretly
clenched into a fist.
No one had ever dared to speak to him like that before.
Madeleine was the first.
“I think you’ve really gone crazy from being poor!”
Madeleine didn’t get angry. She just gave him a sweet smile.
“That’s right, I’m broke as a joke. That’s why I’m here to collect a
debt from Mr. Carroll. With such a big business, Mr. Carroll
shouldn’t be short on this little bit of cash, right?”
Edward narrowed his eyes, his gaze lingering on her for a few
seconds, as if trying to decide if she was serious or just
messing with him.
After a moment, he let out a low, dangerous laugh.
“Well, well, Madeleine. You’ve grown a spine.”
He took out his phone and found Madeleine’s Facebook
contact in his block list.
The first transfer failed. His phone showed that she wasn’t his

friend.
“You’re messing with me!
?”
Madeleine slapped her forehead.
“Oh, my bad. I blocked you and forgot to unblock you. Hold on.”
She said the heart–stabbing words with perfect politeness as
she pulled her phone out of her expensive handbag.
Edward had sharp eyes and immediately saw a photo of her and
Roderick at an amusement park behind Madeleine’s clear
phone case. She was on her tiptoes, putting something on
Roderick, smiling sweetly.
His eyes turned cold, and Edward pressed his phone a little
harder.
“Ones, tens, hundreds, thousands…”
Madeleine stared at the transferred amount and carefully
counted it twice.
“Twenty million. Don’t come to me with this sob story again!”

Madeleine kept her head down, staring at the screen. After a
long moment, she squeezed out, “This isn’t even as much as
my husband gives me for an allowance.”
Of course, Edward didn’t believe that. He just figured Madeleine
was suppressing her glee to save face.
Madeleine took the money with no intention of staying longer,
but as she turned to leave, Edward yanked her back.
He sneered, “Don’t tell me Roderick’s going under, so he sent
you to ask me for money.”
“Huh?”
Madeleine really wished Bradley Kline were here right now, so
he could come and fix Edward’s brain.
“I heard Roderick isn’t even bidding on the North City Science
Park project. Is he out of money?”
“Or… is he scared?”
At that, Madeleine’s expression changed drastically, as if someone had just stepped on her tail.
Her eyes flinched, but she quickly composed herself and

retorted.
“Wh–what nonsense are you talking about? Our family’s
company is doing fine.”
Her gaze shifted. “Roderick said he’s not bidding on that project
because… because he doesn’t think it’s a good one.”
A smirk formed on Edward’s lips as he stared intently at
Madeleine’s changing expression.
So flustered?
Looks like he guessed right.
That Roderick fellow would never give up so easily. He was just
putting up a smokescreen.
