Fleur lowered her head, a flash of malicious triumph glinting in her eyes.
A split second later, she stumbled heavily, her slender frame collapsing directly toward Dylan.
"Fleur!" Dylan caught her just in time. "Are you alright?"
Fleur feigned weakness as she leaned into his chest, looking up at him with tear-swollen eyes. "Dylan, did I... did I make things difficult for you again?" her voice quavered softly, laced with guilt.
"Don’t overthink it. Elise just has that kind of temper," Dylan consoled her, his tone softening. "The doctor said your body is too weak and that you need complete rest. I’ll have James take you back to your ward first."
"But Robin..."
"I’ll stay and guard Robin," Dylan said, his deep voice carrying an unyielding weight. "Rest assured, the moment he wakes up, I’ll let you know right away. Go get some rest—your health comes first."
Fleur cast a lingering glance toward the ward. Deep down, she was still deeply uneasy, terrified that Robin would wake up and expose what she had done to his father. Had the scene she staged this morning pushed the boy’s condition past the point of no return?
"James, see the eldest Madam back to her room," Dylan ordered, ignoring her hesitation.
James stepped forward immediately, offering a respectful nod. "Madam, allow me to escort you back."
Fleur looked up at Dylan again. "Dylan, I’m still so worried. Couldn’t I just wait in the family lounge next door?"
Dylan’s brows knit slightly as his dark eyes locked onto hers. "Do you not trust me to take care of Robin?"
Fleur choked on her words. She pressed her lips together, knowing that no matter how anxious she felt, she had no choice but to retreat to her room. Pushing any further would only invite suspicion.
"Alright. I’ll head back to my ward then. But please, if Robin wakes up, you must tell me immediately."
"Rest assured. I will."
Only then did Fleur allow James to support her as she walked away.
Dylan stood motionless, his narrow, hooded eyes tracking her frail, swaying figure from behind. Within those deep pools, a frost-cold murderous glint slowly took hold.
Down in the underground garage, Elise sat in the passenger seat of Alexander’s car and sent a text message to Jessica:
Elise: [Dr. Sanders, please give me a call as soon as you see this.]
After sending it, she clicked off the screen and slid the phone back into her bag. She closed her eyes, raising a hand to press against her aching temples.
Alexander looked over at her. "How is Robin doing?"
Elise opened her eyes, shot him a quick look, and let out a soft sigh. "Robin suffered abuse at the hands of a nanny before, and later, Quinn maliciously pushed him down a flight of stairs. It caused a psychogenic memory disorder. He sustained another blow to the head this time, but while the doctors confirmed the physical injuries are purely superficial, he suffered a severe stress response the moment he woke up."
Alexander frowned. "If there’s no structural damage to his head, why would he suffer such an extreme stress response out of nowhere?"
Elise pressed her lips together. Considering how well she knew Alexander, she saw no reason to hide the truth from him.
"I suspect he might have remembered everything. On top of that, I doubt Fleur’s hands are clean in this either. Under that double psychological shock, it’s no wonder he suffered such a violent breakdown."
"Fleur laid a hand on Robin?!" Alexander gasped in disbelief. "That’s impossible, isn’t it? She’s his biological mother!"
"Are unfit parents really that rare in this world?" Elise looked at him. "You’re a lawyer—have you really never come across child abuse cases?"
Alexander paused, thinking it over for a moment. "I have, but those are relatively extreme, isolated cases—mostly found in impoverished areas with deep-seated gender biases. Robin carries the blood of the Bennett family, and Fleur relies entirely on him to maintain her footing with them. No matter how foolish she is, she wouldn’t be crazy enough to abuse her own leverage, would she?"
"She certainly understands the logic," Elise said. "However, extreme emotions can turn a person into a monster. When someone loses control, it’s entirely possible for them to cross lines they wouldn’t normally cross."
"That’s true. I heard Fleur suffers from depression herself?" Alexander analyzed. "If someone has an underlying psychological condition, losing control and acting irrationally during an episode isn’t unheard of."
"Depression?" Elise let out a cold, mocking laugh. "Does she honestly look like someone who suffers from depression to you?"
