Midway through Dylan’s sentence, the phone in his pocket began to vibrate. He pulled it out.
It was James.
"I need to take this," Dylan said, pressing the answer button. "What is it?"
"Sir, the eldest Madam is here," James said, his tone strained with difficulty. "She’s making a massive scene, crying and screaming that she has to go in and take the young master away."
Dylan’s face darkened instantly. "Keep her out. I’m coming down right now."
Hanging up, Dylan turned to Elise. "My sister-in-law is outside the ward trying to take Robin. I have to get down there immediately."
Elise knit her brows. "She has no intention of actually taking him. She’s throwing a tantrum on purpose. The bigger the scene she makes, the more it will agitate Robin. Dylan, can you seriously not see what she’s trying to do?"
Dylan looked at her. "Elise, I know exactly what I’m doing regarding my sister-in-law."
"You know exactly what you’re doing?" Elise let out a sharp, mocking laugh. "If you actually knew what you were doing, Robin wouldn’t be lying in a hospital bed today. You always have a library of excuses, Dylan.
Fleur is Robin’s biological mother, so you side with her; Fleur lost her husband while pregnant, so your heart bleeds for her. When her little stunts weren’t actively endangering Robin’s life and health, I had nothing to say if you wanted to turn a blind eye. But Robin is severely injured this time. Deep down, you already suspect her—yet even with those suspicions, the moment she cries and throws a tantrum, you soften up all over again."
Dylan stared at her, his Adam’s apple bobbing with difficulty.
"Elise," the man said, his dark eyes intense. "Robin getting hurt this time was my oversight. I promise you, something like this will never happen again."
"You promise me?" Elise sneered. "Dylan, we are currently separated and on the verge of divorce. You don’t need to promise me a damn thing. The only reason I care so much about what Fleur does is because I don’t want to see Robin get hurt again."
Dylan pressed his lips together. "Either way, stop interacting with Fleur. As for Robin, I will have dedicated guards watching over him from today onward."
"Why are you so desperate to keep me away from her?" Elise demanded, staring intently into his eyes, trying to catch a flicker of the truth.
But Dylan’s eyes remained as black as ink, deep and utterly bottomless. She still couldn’t read him. When Dylan decided to keep a secret, Elise had never been able to pry loose even a single shred of it.
He had probably never truly trusted her...
A wave of bitter cold washed over Elise’s heart. Five years of sharing a bed as husband and wife, and in the end, Dylan couldn’t even offer her basic trust. After all this, how did he still have the audacity to cling to this marriage?
"Fine. If you won’t tell me, I’ll dig it up myself," Elise said, her gaze turning ice-cold, her tone unyielding. "You lost the right to interfere in the feud between Fleur and me a long time ago."
"Elise!" Dylan frowned, an edge of panic bleeding into his tone. "What will it take for you to just listen to me?! My sister-in-law’s situation isn’t as simple as you think. Can you just trust me this once?!"
Hearing this, Elise’s brows drew together sharply. Looking at the man standing before her, a deeply familiar sense of disappointment welled up in her chest.
This was classic Dylan. He only ever considered what he wanted to do, stubbornly dug his heels into his own convictions, never consulted her, never shared a single detail—yet expected her unconditional trust.
What a joke.
"You’ve clearly forgotten that I trusted you far more than once." Elise let out a faint, hollow laugh, lowering her head to pull her trench coat tighter. Looking back up, a mocking smile touched her lips. "But tell me, Dylan, what did that trust ever buy me?"
Dylan’s eye twitched.
