Upon receiving Elise’s call, Rina followed her instructions and went to her room to pack her belongings.
As she came downstairs, Mrs. Shaw called out to her.
"Rina, wait up."
Rina paused, turning to look at her. "What’s wrong?"
Mrs. Shaw stood up. "I had Mr. Carter brew some millet porridge and whip up a few side dishes. Getting a decent meal at the hospital is bound to be a hassle. Take these along—both Elise and Robin can eat."
Hearing this, warmth bloomed in Rina’s chest. "Nat, you really think of everything."
Mrs. Shaw shot her a playful, scolding look. "Oh, come on, it’s nothing! Hold on a second, I’ll go grab it from the kitchen."
Rina smiled softly. "Alright, take your time. No rush."
Mrs. Shaw turned and slipped into the kitchen.
Moments later, she emerged carrying two large thermal food containers. "Let’s go, I’m coming with you."
By the time Rina and Mrs. Shaw arrived at the hospital, dusk had already fallen, right in time for dinner.
Neither of them entered Robin’s ward. Although they knew the boy’s emotions were stable now, having too many people crowd around would only add to his psychological burden.
Jessica stayed behind in the ward to keep the boy company, signaling for Elise to take Rina and Mrs. Shaw to the adjacent family lounge.
Inside the lounge, the three women sat down on the sofa.
Mrs. Shaw placed the heavy thermal containers on the coffee table, turning to Elise. "I had Mr. Carter prepare these. Since Robin has gastroenteritis, a bit of millet porridge should be fine, right?"
"Natalie, thank you for going through all this trouble," Elise said. "However, the doctor recommended that Robin hold off on solid food until tomorrow. He’s on an IV drip right now, so skipping a meal won’t hurt him."
"Is that so? Well, if he can’t eat it, you will."
Mrs. Shaw reached out to open the container, but Elise hurriedly stopped her.
"Thank you. I’ll eat in a bit, please don’t fuss over it right now."
Mrs. Shaw paused, looking at her intently. "Did you even eat lunch today?"
"I did," Elise laughed. "Don’t worry, I won’t let my little seedling go hungry."
"Well, starving our little seedling is definitely out of the question!" Mrs. Shaw set the container down and leaned back onto the sofa, asking, "Did the doctor say when Robin can be discharged?"
"If he doesn’t run another fever tonight, he can leave tomorrow," Elise replied.
"That’s good." Mrs. Shaw nodded, letting out a soft sigh. "Poor boy really went through hell this time."
Elise pressed her lips together silently. To have a mother like Fleur, Robin truly was unfortunate.
Rina looked at Elise’s grim expression. "What actually went down with Robin this time, Elise?"
Elise let out a heavy sigh, ultimately deciding to fill them both in on the whole story.
When she finished, silence settled over the room.
A moment later, Mrs. Shaw finally couldn’t hold back any longer and spat out a low curse. "What an absolute disgrace! Has that widow Fleur gone completely psychopathic?! How could she lay a hand on such a sweet, sensible boy?! Birth mother? Please—she acts more like a villainous stepmother!"
Rina remained quiet. Less emotional than Mrs. Shaw, she simply knit her brows and looked at Elise. "Elise, where does Dylan stand on this?"
"He’s keeping Fleur away from Robin for the time being."
"That’s it?!" Mrs. Shaw scoffed in disbelief. "She literally abused her own child, and Dylan is still coddling her?!"
