Since his departure, Dylan had been completely off the grid.
Elise called his assistant, Oliver. She knew Dylan must have discovered the truth about the child’s paternity long before she did, and she knew he had anticipated that she would find out sooner or later. Because he foresaw all of this, he felt confident enough to abandon Robin at the guesthouse and disappear once again.
Elise dialed the number to demand an answer: where was the flaw in all this?
Fleur wasn’t Robin’s mother, yet the boy’s face was a mirror image of the family; there was no doubt he was of Bennett blood. But if he was truly a Bennett child, how could Fleur not be his biological mother?
Over the phone, Oliver could only offer repeated assurances that Robin was indeed the family’s rightful heir. As for Fleur, Dylan had made it explicitly clear: she no longer had any connection to the family or anyone in it.
When Elise pressed for details, Oliver clammed up.
"Madam," Oliver sighed near the end of the call, "I know caring for the young master puts a lot on your shoulders, but Mr. Bennett really had no choice this time. Something critical came up with the overseas branch. He has to settle it in person and won’t be back anytime soon, so we can only trouble you to look after Robin a while longer.
"Please rest assured that Dr. Sanders will stay in Rainport to assist with the young master. Having his therapist around should lighten your load. Also, Mr. Bennett specifically asked me to tell you to take care of yourself and not overwork."
Despite the long speech, not a single word answered what Elise actually wanted to know. Hanging up only left her more frustrated.
She wasn’t naive. After everything that had unfolded, she knew Dylan wasn’t abroad merely handling routine corporate matters. Whatever was happening was almost certainly tied to Fleur.
As for Robin, he was just a helpless, innocent child caught in the crossfire; she couldn’t simply wash her hands of him out of spite toward Dylan.
After careful thought, Elise made up her mind. Acting in her capacity as Robin’s legal adoptive mother, she hired Alexander to press criminal charges against Fleur for assault. Whatever Dylan’s motives were, Fleur’s abuse of the child couldn’t simply be swept under the rug.
At the station, Fleur proved utterly uncooperative. Throwing tantrums, she arrogantly demanded to see the police, repeatedly declaring that she was the Eldest Daughter-in-law of the Bennett family and threatening to have their legal team sue the officers.
Despite a young female officer’s repeated attempts to calm her, Fleur continued to rave like a frantic street hooligan.
However, since she hadn’t caused physical harm to anyone during her outburst at the guesthouse, and the past abuse case involving Robin hadn’t been formally filed yet, the local police had no legal choice but to release her with a stern warning.
Leaving the station, Fleur went straight back to Mr. Carter’s guesthouse. She had intended to lie low for a few days to recover her strength before figuring out her next move, only to be informed by Mr. Carter that Dylan had already canceled her reservation.
Standing at the front desk, Fleur stared at the innkeeper in disbelief. "How is that possible? Dylan... he would never do this to me..."
"Miss Bonnaire, it’s actually good that you’re here," Mr. Carter said mildly. "Your bags are still upstairs. Should I have a staff member help you pack?"
It wasn’t that Fleur was set on staying at this specific place, but the cold reality was that she didn’t even have enough cash to buy a plane ticket back to North City.
Dylan was unreachable, and he had canceled her room...
This was completely out of character. Could it be... he knows too?
Her breath hitched as a chilling realization hit her: she couldn’t stay in the country a moment longer.
Snatching her luggage and personal documents, Fleur hurried out of the guesthouse in a panic.
On the second-floor balcony of the neighboring inn, Mr. Lee stood leaning against the railing, watching her drag her suitcase down the street while frantically talking on her phone.
"Theo."
Theo immediately flicked a lighter open to spark the tip.
Taking a deep drag, Mr. Lee exhaled a trail of pale smoke, his voice dropping to a low, magnetic baritone. "The Bennetts have been fractured by internal strife for years. Putting up with a man like Dylan... Elise certainly has her hands full."
"Based on our latest leads," Theo noted, "that lady from the Harper family really might be the person Old Master Lee is searching for."
"We return to North City tomorrow," Mr. Lee commanded coldly. "Set up an opportunity for me to meet her."
"Understood, sir."
Shortly after finishing her phone call, a substantial funds transfer landed in Fleur’s account. Without hesitation, she booked a ticket on the next flight to Switzerland.
Catching a cab straight to the airport, she slipped into the restroom as soon as she arrived.
She quickly wiped away her thick makeup and removed her colored contact lenses, revealing light hazel eyes and naturally pale, ash-brown eyebrows. Reaching up, she unpinned the long, wavy wig she wore, giving her head a quick shake to let a mop of short, cropped blonde hair fall naturally into place.
A nearby traveler stared at her in utter shock.
With an effortless, casual smile, she turned to the bystander. "Never seen cosplay before?"
The traveler offered an awkward chuckle and hurried away.
With a cold snort, she unzipped a hidden compartment inside her bag and pulled out a different set of identification papers. The photo showed the exact face she carried right now—but the name belonged to someone else entirely.
