Trapped in a realm of deep sleep, Elise was ensnared within a dream.
Dense, boundless fog swirled all around her.
From somewhere in the gloom came the faint, heart-wrenching wail of a baby.
She ran with all her strength, searching frantically, but no matter how fast her legs moved, she couldn’t break free from the surrounding mist. The infant’s cries grew fainter and farther away, until they faded into total silence.
"Mommy... Mommy, I’m right here! Come find me, Mommy..."
A familiar child’s voice called out from the deep heart of the fog.
Guided by that sound, Elise threw caution to the wind and sprinted forward in a desperate chase.
"Mommy, I’m over here! Hurry, Mommy, please hurry..."
She ran recklessly, even though the thick haze blinded her path. Stubbornly, relentlessly, she pursued the voice.
Suddenly, the mist vanished into thin air.
Her surroundings shifted, transforming once more into the warehouse from five years ago.
This time, she saw a small child standing alone in the center of the space. The boy had his back turned to her, but his tiny silhouette bore an unmistakable resemblance to Robin.
Elise took a step forward, approaching him with painstaking care. "Robin..."
She called out to him softly, her voice barely a whisper, terrified of scaring him away.
"Robin... it’s Mommy. Robin, won’t you turn around and look at Mommy?"
Tears streamed down her face as her voice trembled, her gaze locked onto the small figure. Yet the child offered no response whatsoever.
Panicking, Elise accelerated her pace—
Suddenly, the mist rushed back in like a roaring wave. In an instant, the small figure was completely swallowed by the haze!
"No! Robin—!"
Elise shrieked, her eyes flying open.
"Elise!" Madeline stroked her face, her eyes filled with panic. "Robin is right here! Elise, you’re finally awake... you scared me to death..."
Staring up at the familiar ceiling and listening to Madeline’s sniffling, Elise gradually regained her senses.
It had been another dream.
Then Robin...
She suddenly grabbed Madeline’s hand. "Madeline, the DNA test..."
"It’s real!" Madeline looked at her, nodding through her tears. "Robin really is your child! Elise, your son didn’t die—he’s alive, he’s safe and sound!"
At those words, Elise struggled to sit up.
"You just woke up, don’t move around like that!"
"I need to see Robin..."
"I’ll go bring him up! Just stay lying down." Madeline wiped her tears with the back of her hand. "Don’t worry, Dr. Sanders worked on preparing Robin emotionally starting yesterday when we got back. He already knows he’s your and Dylan’s child."
Lying in bed, Elise looked at Madeline, her hands subconsciously clutching the blanket. "How... how did Robin react when he found out?"
"He was thrilled, of course!" Madeline pulled out a few tissues to gently wipe away Elise’s tears. "That boy has always been so attached to you—he wanted nothing more than for you to be his mom. Now that he knows you’re truly his mother, he’s over the moon! The little brat was even bragging to Lily, which made her burst into tears, and he had to spend forever soothing her."
Listening to Madeline’s words, Elise felt her heart melt. But at the thought of five years lost to mistaken grief, and all the grievances the boy must have suffered during that time, a sharp, aching pain pierced her chest.
"All these five years... I failed him..."
"How did you fail him? It was clearly Dylan who..." Madeline caught herself mid-sentence, stealing a quick glance at Jessica standing nearby before letting out a soft sigh. "Anyway, the child is alive. Even if only one survived, it’s still a blessing from above."
Elise nodded. "I want to see Robin."
