Chapter 184: Chapter 184

Elise froze, snapping her head around to stare at Jessica.

"What do you mean by that?"

"Please don’t get worked up," Jessica urged quickly. "I was merely throwing that out there—"

Before she could finish her sentence, the rumble of a car engine sounded from outside.

"I’ll go check who’s here," Mrs. Lander said, heading toward the entrance.

The moment she reached the doorway, she saw Oliver hurrying in, looking travel-worn.

"Where is Madam?" Oliver asked Mrs. Lander with a solemn expression.

"She’s in the living room," Mrs. Lander replied, stepping aside to let him pass.

With a brief nod, Oliver entered the house and walked straight toward Elise.

"Madam, we have news of Mr. Bennett!"

Elise looked at him calmly. "Is he still alive?"

Her tone was cool and detached—carrying only the urgency of inquiring about the outcome, with not a shred of genuine concern to be heard.

Oliver cleared his throat. "Mr. Edison just called me. Their people only just located Mr. Bennett. He suffered a few injuries and they are currently stranded on an archipelago out West. Securing their return trip will require some maneuvering, but they said the earliest he could arrive back in the country is the morning after tomorrow."

Upon hearing this, Elise gave a faint, flat response: "I see."

Oliver kept his eyes on her, waiting for her to say more.

Instead, Elise simply stood up, looked at Jessica, and said, "Dr. Sanders, let’s talk in the study."

Jessica nodded, rising to her feet to follow Elise upstairs.

Left standing in place, Oliver watched Elise’s cold, distant back, letting out a silent, inward sigh.

Upstairs in the study, Jessica stood before the desk, watching Elise support herself against the edge as she slowly sat down.

"There’s no one else to disturb us now," Elise said, looking up at Jessica. "Dr. Sanders, you may speak freely."

Jessica, however, found herself caught in a difficult position.

"Miss Harper, all I can tell you is that I was indeed entrusted by Mr. Bennett to conduct psychological treatment for you, and that the method used was hypnosis."

Hearing this, Elise’s composure remained entirely unshaken. She wasn’t surprised in the slightest—because she had already guessed it.

Ever since learning that Robin was her child, she knew that Dylan was hiding a mountain of secrets from her.

Yet, they had lived together for five years after all. She would have noticed something like an affair or a change of heart, yet regarding what had happened to her child back then, her memory was surprisingly sparse.

She only remembered falling into a deep, prolonged sleep at the hospital, and upon waking, being told that her babies were gone. That earth-shattering agony had been impossible to bear. She clearly remembered those painful years, yet within that stretch of time, her memories concerning Dylan felt strangely flat and fragmented.

Throughout those endless five years, she had only seen Dylan’s avoidance and cold detachment. Regarding the children, the only things she recalled were the prenatal checkup reports and that lonely cemetery plot.

Now that she reflected on it carefully, however, many details simply didn’t add up.

For instance, when she was kidnapped, the captors had dialed Dylan’s phone over and over again, yet he hadn’t picked up a single call. That had always been a thorn in her heart. Later, Quinn had even used that incident to trigger her, driving her to confront Dylan in a desperate rage—yet he had refused to utter a single word of explanation.

What was the truth he was so fiercely guarding—a truth so absolute that he would rather let himself be manipulated by Quinn and willingly shoulder the infamy of abandoning his wife and child for a mistress?

Looking back, many of her memories following the kidnapping felt strangely piecemeal. Elise had a powerful intuition that Jessica had used hypnosis to wipe away large chunks of what transpired during that ordeal.

Elise locked her eyes onto Jessica. "So, what exactly did you two make me forget?"

Jessica let out a soft sigh and explained:

"As a psychiatrist, you were my patient. Strictly speaking, I shouldn’t have performed hypnotic therapy on you without your explicit consent. However, Mr. Bennett, as your lawful husband, felt that hypnotic treatment would help you, and he was extremely insistent. Given that your mental state at the time was indeed dire, I ultimately agreed to perform the therapy."
